That year, the Ministry’s research department conducted a significant survey on French cultural habits, revealing that five million individuals, including half of all young people, play a musical instrument. Consequently, Jack Lang, scenographer Christian Dupavillon, and Maurice Fleuret devised the concept of a major public event to allow all musicians to showcase their talent and gain recognition. The inaugural Fête de la Musique took place on June 21, 1982, the symbolic date of the summer solstice.
