BBC viewers were completely captivated by Lulu as she spoke about her ‘intimate’ project that led her to therapy.
The legendary Scottish singer appeared on The One Show on Friday (May 6) to discuss her upcoming tour and memoir “If Only You Knew”.
Her candid autobiography walks readers through her life’s journey, with Lulu, born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie and also known as Lulu Kennedy-Cairns, sharing that revealing her story felt like ‘being let out of jail’.
Hosts Alex Jones and Roman Kemp listened closely as the artist discussed the difficulties of writing her book, which required her to confront the misconceptions about her, according to Bristol Live.
The renowned musician admitted: “People think they know Lulu, but no one truly knows you. I’ve always been very careful, quite private, and talkative, but I keep many things to myself. Now I’m sharing everything because the landscape has changed.”
She expanded on this, saying: “When I was younger, everything was a secret and there was a lot of shame in not discussing things, but nowadays people are open about these subjects and I think it’s healthy. I’ve had an incredible life, but there are aspects I’ve never talked about.”
In an emotional revelation, Lulu shared: “I had to seek therapy because it was challenging not to unravel the things I was told to keep quiet about and those I was assumed to be. Once you discuss the things you’re assumed of.”
She noted: “I have mental health challenges, I’ve been through a lot with my family, and these are things I didn’t want to discuss, but I reveal them in the book, which is like being let out of jail.”
As Lulu openly shared her struggles, viewers at home were taken aback by her seemingly ageless appearance, quickly taking to social media to express their surprise.
One viewer commented on X, previously known as Twitter: “Lulu looks amazing for 76 #TheOneShow.” Another viewer chimed in: “#TheOneShow Lulu looks incredible! She appears so youthful. Love her!”
A third observer mentioned: “Lulu looks good, but she’s not my favorite singer #TheOneShow.”
The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer
