Third Man Records is set to reissue the final album from the band Heatmiser, led by Elliott Smith, in celebration of its 30th anniversary. The newly remastered edition of 1996’s Mic City Sons will be available on July 25. This version features a remastered take on the original 12 tracks, along with 12 rare and previously unreleased songs, including a “Rock Version” of the Elliott Smith classic “Christian Brothers.” Check out the tracklist and a teaser video for the reissue below.
The remaining members of Heatmiser—vocalist/guitarist Neil Gust, bassist Sam Coomes, and drummer Tony Lash—opted to reissue Mic City Sons after collaborating with Third Man on the Music of Heatmiser anthology. “While looking through our archives, I discovered tracks that were nearly finished but never mixed, alongside some pieces we didn’t have time to fully explore,” Lash mentioned in a press release. “It really took me back to that era in a profound way. I gained a deeper appreciation for the creative environment we had, if only we could have navigated our interpersonal challenges better. This record reflects the potential we had as a band.”
Heatmiser produced three studio albums—Dead Air (1993), Cop and Speeder (1994), and Mic City Sons—before parting ways, partially due to Elliott Smith’s burgeoning solo career. “He became such a significant figure on his own, and then just fell out of our plans,” noted Neil Gust. “It was disappointing.”
