In 1999, the legendary New York rap collective Wu-Tang Clan launched their inaugural video game, Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style. Now, 25 years later, the Wu is back with an exciting new project titled Wu-Tang: Rise of the Deceiver. This announcement was made simultaneously at Summer Game Fest and during the opening performance of the group’s farewell tour, marking a significant moment in the journey of one of the greatest rap groups in history.
The Verge had the chance to connect with the developers at Brass Lion Entertainment to discuss the unique experience of collaborating with rap icons on a project that symbolizes both the conclusion of an era in hip-hop and the dawn of new beginnings.
Rise of the Deceiver is a cooperative action game where players, endowed with powers from the legendary Wu-Tang Clan members, battle against those intent on tainting their homeland. Developed over three years, the game initially started as a companion piece to Angel of Dust, a film produced by Ghostface Killah and directed by The RZA.
“We focused on aspects of that script that translated well into interactive experiences and built a companion project around it,” explained Bryna Dabby Smith, co-founder and CEO of Brass Lion Entertainment.
According to Dabby Smith, the core principle guiding Rise of the Deceiver is to “do it for the culture.” The gaming world has seen various hip-hop themed games over the years, but few delve into the artistry, legacy, and essence of the genre beyond superficial elements. “We aimed to create a game rooted in authenticity,” Dabby Smith stated. “It was crafted by the culture, for the culture, truly representing what [Wu-Tang Clan] has contributed over the years.”
And the game’s soundtrack, featuring music from Wu-Tang’s extensive 30-year history, has been meticulously constructed from scratch.
“For us, how we treat the music is crucial,” Dabby Smith emphasized. It’s more than just snippets of “C.R.E.A.M” or “Protect Ya Neck” during cutscenes. Their sound team has developed a dynamic music system.
“As you play, the music reacts to your actions, offering a completely personalized experience.” Furthermore, players will encounter Wu-Tang’s discography in ways they have never before experienced.
“We’re not just using the familiar songs. There are remixes, orchestral adaptations,” Dabby Smith mentioned. The game even features brand new tracks that incorporate samples from Wu-Tang to create something that feels both fresh and comforting to long-time fans.
“Hip-hop is an art form that blends different elements into something unique,” explained Evan Narcisse, a former video game journalist and writer on the project. “We’re emulating that same ethos.”
Rise of the Deceiver is designed to captivate all types of gaming enthusiasts, not just those in their 30s who vibe with hip-hop. There’s a little something for everyone. And for those who are in that demographic, this game will serve as an homage to one of the most influential musical acts of the era.
“The Wu-Tang Clan transcends ordinary life,” Narcisse remarked. “They are like superheroes, deserving of a universe that reflects their legendary status.”
