LONDON, June 7 — The final gig of Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath’s frontman will be streamed globally after fans snatched up tickets for the hometown concert, featuring the original line-up, in just 16 minutes, the band announced yesterday.
Osbourne, who disclosed in 2020 that he has Parkinson’s disease, will team up with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward for the all-day Back To The Beginning event in Birmingham, central England, where the heavy metal icons originated in 1968.
The performance on July 5 at Aston Villa Football Club’s Villa Park stadium will also showcase sets by US rock acts Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, and Slayer, among others, in addition to a brief solo performance by Osbourne.
This will mark the first show of the original line-up in 20 years and serve as Osbourne’s farewell.
“With the concert … selling out in under 16 minutes, those who missed out on attending in person can dive into what promises to be the greatest heavy metal show ever,” the band stated on Friday.
Fans were able to purchase live-stream tickets from 3pm (1400 GMT) on Friday for £24.99 (RM142), allowing them to watch the concert ‘live,’ albeit with a two-hour delay from the arena’s start time, and continue viewing for another 48 hours.
“We received an overwhelming response from fans worldwide who couldn’t secure tickets to the show, and they turned to social media, urging us to stream the concert live,” said Osbourne’s wife, Sharon.
“Given the significance of this event, we simply couldn’t let them down.”
Black Sabbath has sold over 75 million albums globally and is widely regarded as a pioneer of heavy metal music.
All profits from the concert will benefit charities, including Cure Parkinson’s and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Osbourne’s diagnosis prompted a pause in his touring. However, Sharon told the BBC that the Villa Park concert would be his last. “This is his full stop,” she reportedly said. — AFP
