John Fogerty mentioned that he was once given the opportunity to reclaim the guitar he used during the peak of Creedence Clearwater Revival, but he declined due to the memories tied to the instrument.
However, his wife and manager, Julie, purchased it regardless and gifted it to him for Christmas, initiating a healing journey that helped him re-engage with music.
Fogerty utilized the Rickenbacker, which has “Acme” hand-painted on it, in his forthcoming album, Legacy – The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years. This 20-track album features detailed recreations of CCR classics, set to release in August.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Fogerty revealed that he parted ways with the guitar in the ‘70s. Approximately 20 years later, he was offered the chance to repurchase it for $40,000. Nonetheless, the guitar reminded him of the painful legal conflicts with his former bandmates and record label.
How Getting His Old Guitar Back Helped John Fogerty Heal
“I was hurt. I was damaged,” Fogerty shared. “I began as a joyful kid in music, but during the Creedence era, and soon after, it was anything but joyful.”
Yet, upon picking up the guitar, Fogerty’s emotions transformed, allowing him to return to performing. With Legacy, he’s taken another significant step.
“The aim was to reconnect and regain that feeling about everything,” he said. “The person who couldn’t even bear to look at his own guitar in the ’90s would have never done that.”

Although Fogerty introduced a new song titled “Weeping in the Promised Land” in 2021, he downplayed the idea of a new album of original material, despite previously indicating it could happen.
“Do I have a collection of written and recorded songs? No, I don’t,” he stated. However, he mentioned being motivated after receiving the American Music Honors last month, during which Bruce Springsteen inducted him and Jackson Browne performed the Eagles’ “Take It Easy.”
“While we were driving back to the hotel with my wife, I said, ‘I’m like 10 feet off the ground. I want to go write songs and record them!’” Fogerty exclaimed.

“When you reach 80 years old, you finally receive the special key to the kingdom. I guess you can do whatever you like,” he said about Legacy. “I decided that this is what I wanted to do – give myself a present.”
Fogerty also provided two additional reasons for creating the album: “Firstly, there’s virtually no chance I will ever own any part of the old masters. This is sort of the Taylor Swift aspect. Secondly, I believe there’s a joy palpable in the music that may have been absent in the original versions.”
