Lola Young’s “Messy” achieves a significant milestone by topping three Billboard airplay charts, tying a distinguished hit from over a decade ago for a unique accomplishment.
“Messy” climbs two spots to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart (for the week of May 24). The track is now leading a third radio format, having previously topped Pop Airplay just a week prior and Alternative Airplay for one week in April.
Released under Day One/Island Records and promoted to radio by Republic, “Messy” is only the second song by a solo female artist to hit No. 1 across Pop Airplay, Adult Pop Airplay, and Alternative Airplay in nearly 30 years of the charts’ existence. Lorde’s “Royals” (also on Republic) dominated those charts for one, three, and seven weeks, respectively, back in 2013. Both songs marked the debut entries for each artist on the surveys.
(The Adult Pop Airplay chart is compiled based on weekly plays from 80 mainstream top 40 radio stations monitored by Mediabase, with data supplied to Billboard by Luminate.)
Meanwhile, both Young and Lorde are looking to expand their radio chart achievements. Lorde’s latest single, “What Was That,” has surged from 23 to 18 on Alternative Airplay and from 31 to 27 on Adult Alternative Airplay. Young released the follow-up to “Messy,” titled “One Thing,” today (May 16).
“I’m coming to understand that as an artist, I’m not focused on the glitz and glamour — I don’t scream ‘Hollywood’,” Young shared with Billboard late last year. “For a long time, I aimed to embody this ideal of Western beauty — but I’ve realized that’s not me. I prioritize authenticity and truth. I embrace my body, I have fun, and I express myself freely. That’s what people connect with.”
All charts dated May 24 will be updated on Billboard.com on Tuesday, May 20.
