Last night, the band Wednesday made their television debut with a performance of their new song, “Elderberry Wine,” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The indie-rock group from Asheville, North Carolina, played in front of a charming mock living room backdrop, featuring the new single artwork displayed in a frame, flowery wallpaper, wall sconces, and softly glowing lamps. You can watch a replay below.
The main lineup of Wednesday includes singer-guitarist Karly Hartzman, guitarist and vocalist MJ Lenderman, pedal steel player Xandy Chelmis, bassist Ethan Baechtold, and drummer Alan Miller, all of whom appeared on the late-night stage. Recently, Lenderman announced that while he will continue to be part of Wednesday in the studio, he will not be touring with the band anymore. His latest solo album, Manning Fireworks, was released last autumn.
“Elderberry Wine” marks the first new music from Wednesday since their 2023 album, Rat Saw God. According to Hartzman, the song is a love anthem about “creating just the right environment for fulfillment,” highlighting “the delicate balance that needs to be struck, especially in love, for two lives to intersect without harming each other.”
Technically, both Lenderman and Hartzman had their late-night TV debut last September when they performed “Wristwatch,” the MJ Lenderman hit, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
