Few can truly grasp the experience … except for Scott Devours. The musician is stepping in for the dismissed Zak Starkey as the drummer for the Who during their upcoming U.S. tour, following Starkey’s lengthy departure from the band. Devours, a familiar face in Roger Daltrey’s solo performances for many years, has mixed feelings about this opportunity — primarily due to Starkey’s exit. “I realize, and accept, that countless lifelong Who fans are deeply saddened by Zak’s absence from the throne. As a devoted fan myself, a part of me is grappling with this loss as well,” Devours shared on social media on May 19. “It’s truly a strange mix of feelings to have a pivotal moment in my career also come with the shadows of someone else’s loss.” Devours hopes that attendees can embrace the change, similar to when Kenney Jones took over for Keith Moon. “I’m aware that many fans will only accept Zak on that throne. I acknowledge that for some, this is non-negotiable,” he added. “For others, perhaps they are still undecided. Maybe my music can speak for itself?”
Daltrey and Pete Townshend have announced that this will be the final tour for the Who in the U.S., where they will “perform the greatest songs ever written,” according to Devours. Prior to this tour, Starkey—who is the son of Ringo Starr—had been with the band for nearly three decades. Complicating matters, Daltrey and Townshend have started to air grievances publicly post-firing, which Devours is choosing to overlook at this moment. “I will devote every moment, every heartbeat, and every ounce of my effort to them. This is my ultimate aim,” he stated. “But this tour is not about me or anyone except for the Who, which comprises Pete and Roger. I will give them my all, and the rest will soon be history. Thank you for reading. Now, I’m off to collect myself.” The U.S. shows kick off in August.
