Irvine Welsh, the author – still recognized after all these years for Trainspotting – is set to launch a disco album.
The album, titled Men In Love, is a companion to a new book of the same name by the 66-year-old writer. This work serves as an “immediate” sequel to his most renowned piece, continuing the tales of Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, and the others.
The album is described as a “sonic companion to the novel,” with its themes, lyrics, and musical ambiance “mirroring the experiences and inner conflicts of its characters.”
As is typical in these situations, there’s also a single – A Man In Love With Love. Welsh wrote the lyrics, while an entity known as The Sci Fi Soul Orchestra created the music.
So, why disco? Welsh articulates this in a press statement: “In uncertain times, dominated by the rise of soul-dead oligarchs, their damaging technology, and exploitative economics, humanity’s greatest constant remains our boundless capacity for love.”
He further elaborates: “Music is still the means through which we transcend their reductive, low-frequency realm. When we can sing, dance, and express our shared love in joy and exuberance, we diminish their feeble plans to mere irrelevant distractions.”
“Among the most powerful musical forms to convey that ecstasy has been disco music. Regardless of how confused our men (and women) may be in the pursuit of love, while we strive to earn a living for our enjoyment, our genuine inclinations are to celebrate as if it were 2099. So, don’t dismiss the disco; let’s dance away the heartbreak or die trying—because nothing else seems to hold any meaning.”
This isn’t the first time Welsh has ventured into music. Back in 1996, during the height of his fame, he collaborated on a Euro 96-themed record with Primal Scream and Adrian Sherwood’s On U Sound—The Big Man and the Scream Team Meet The Barmy Army Uptown—featuring Welsh reciting sardonic lines from Trainspotting over a dub soundtrack. Remarkably, it peaked at Number 17 in the charts. Times were indeed different.
Later, Welsh was involved in Hibee Nation, alongside Andrew Innes and Martin Duffy from Primal Scream, and journalist/producer Kris Needs. This project released a few dance singles in the late 90s through the Creation offshoot label Eruption.
