What’s Going On with Arcade Fire’s Latest Album?

Over ten years ago, Arcade Fire made waves at the Grammys by winning Album of the Year for The Suburbs. The Canadian rock band became one of the rare independent acts to clinch victory in this highly coveted category during music’s biggest evening. The band had already experienced significant commercial success and critical acclaim, enjoying a peak moment in their career.

Now, with a new album released, it’s evident that public interest in the U.S. has declined markedly, with the previous Grammy winners facing challenges even reaching the charts.

Pink Elephant Misses the Billboard 200

Pink Elephant appears on several music rankings in the U.S. this frame. While it performs reasonably well on a few lists, it is conspicuously absent from one major ranking: the Billboard 200. This 200-position list of the most consumed full-length albums and EPs in America does not include Pink Elephant, which is surprising, given that Arcade Fire has never before had a full album fail to chart.

Previously, the band’s debut album, Funeral, was its lowest-charting success, peaking at No. 123 over two decades ago. Every album since has reached the top 10 on the Billboard 200, with three of them — The Suburbs, Reflektor, and Everything Now — even hitting No. 1.

It’s only been three years since Arcade Fire last had a full-length debut on the Billboard 200. The simply titled We was released in May 2022 and peaked at No. 6. Now, just a short time later, Pink Elephant doesn’t even reach a new low, as it fails to join the Billboard 200 at all.

Album Sales Are Strong – But Not Strong Enough

Pink Elephant makes its mark on one other Billboard list this frame. It opens at No. 10 on the Top Album Sales chart with nearly 6,200 pure purchases, according to Luminate. This figure, entirely from pure sales, positions it among the bestselling releases in the country — however, it’s not sufficient to land it on the Billboard 200.

The title at the bottom of that list, Future’s DS2, moved 8,600 equivalent units in the previous tracking period. It appears that streaming activity did not significantly influence Pink Elephant‘s performance.

Pink Elephant Lands on Other Charts

Pink Elephant also appears on two additional Billboard rankings following its initial full tracking week. It debuts at No. 12 on the Vinyl Albums list and narrowly makes the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, landing at No. 49 on that 50-position ranking.

Sexual Misconduct Allegations Appear to Have Impacted the Band

In mid-2022, shortly after the release of We, frontman Win Butler faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct from several women, as reported in articles by Pitchfork. While Butler denied the allegations and has received support from his wife Régine Chassagne (also part of Arcade Fire), these claims seem to have negatively affected the band’s commercial appeal.
