FOREIGNER lead vocalist Kelly Hansen discussed his choice to leave the band following their iconic summer 2025 tour with Entertainment Tonight.
During FOREIGNER‘s performance on the season finale of NBC‘s singing competition “The Voice” on May 20, Hansen publicly announced his exit with a ceremonial “passing of the torch” to guitarist Luis Maldonado.
When questioned about why now feels like the perfect moment for him to depart FOREIGNER, the 64-year-old Hansen stated (as per BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “It’s just time for me to pursue other interests in my life while I still can. This has been an incredible journey, and I hold nothing but affection for this organization and my bandmates. But I have other priorities — I have other fish I want to fry.”
He continued: “The band will move forward with Luis, and I’ll likely pop in occasionally to say hello. I have a relatively new family I wish to spend time with and numerous projects I want to finish. I’m also involved in cooking, so who knows what may come in the future regarding that.”
When asked about the standout moments of the farewell tour thus far, FOREIGNER bassist Jeff Pilson shared with Entertainment Tonight: “Wow. It’s tough to pinpoint any single highlight since everything’s been fantastic. But the most significant aspect for us is facilitating this transition. It’s wonderful to see Kelly embrace life beyond the band, and we are fully supportive of that. This transition has been both emotional and focused for us. It’s a major change, considering he’s been with us for 20 years, but we’re genuinely excited about the future.”
Upon announcing his departure on May 20, Hansen remarked: “Being the voice of FOREIGNER has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. However, it’s time to pass the mic. Luis embodies the voice, energy, and spirit necessary to carry these songs forward. I couldn’t be prouder to hand this over to him.”
FOREIGNER‘s founding guitarist Mick Jones stated, “In 1976, my goal was to gather the best musicians available,” adding, “The results speak for themselves!” He expressed that “about thirty years later, Jason Bonham motivated me to create a fresh version of FOREIGNER, and the magic was still alive,” noting that “I was particularly fortunate in choosing a lead singer.”
In his statement, Jones recognized Hansen as “one of the best” frontmen in the industry, highlighting how he “revitalized our songs” throughout his 20-year tenure. “His limitless energy and remarkable talent have enabled us to scale great heights and created the opportunity for FOREIGNER vocalist and guitarist Luis Maldonado to lead us home,” Jones remarked. “I wish Kelly immense joy in his future pursuits after our summer tour, and I eagerly anticipate welcoming Luis into his new role.”
Prior to joining FOREIGNER, Luis was primarily known as the guitarist for TRAIN and for his collaborations with Lisa Marie Presley. He now steps into the role of FOREIGNER‘s new lead singer. Maldonado possesses a powerful vocal range, stage charisma, and musical versatility that align perfectly with the band’s next chapter.
“This music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” explained Maldonado. “I’m prepared to honor FOREIGNER‘s legacy and pour my heart into every performance.”
Hansen joined FOREIGNER in 2005 and was instrumental in rejuvenating the band’s live performances. His commanding voice and captivating stage presence introduced FOREIGNER’s timeless hits to a new generation of global fans.
FOREIGNER‘s tour continues through 2025, with both Hansen and Maldonado performing on stage in a symbolic handoff. This transition aligns with significant milestones for the band, including next year’s 50th anniversary since its formation in New York in 1976.
FOREIGNER succeeded original vocalist Lou Gramm by bringing in Hansen. Jones, the sole original member remaining in FOREIGNER, faced health challenges starting in 2011, culminating in heart surgery in 2012. In February 2024, Jones disclosed on social media that he was dealing with Parkinson’s disease, explaining his absence from FOREIGNER’s live performances since 2022.
