The horror-loving metalcore band Ice Nine Kills has expressed an ‘apology’ in response to allegations of utilizing imagery produced by artificial intelligence.
On Saturday (May 24), the Boston-based group shared a post on social media showcasing Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, iconic characters from the Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th films, respectively, preparing food on a grill. This was intended to promote a merchandise sale for Memorial Day weekend.
Fans had a strong negative reaction to the post, claiming that the image was generated by AI. Multiple media outlets reported on the backlash, with the website Metal Injection highlighting various indicators that suggested the possible AI involvement.
The following day (May 25), Ice Nine Kills addressed the issue, issuing a sarcastic statement alongside another seemingly AI-generated image.
The band tweeted on X (formerly Twitter): “We are vigorously investigating the disturbing claims that a recent promotional image was sloppily birthed by AI. We solemnly pledge to get to the bottom of this horrific headline-making crime against Redditors. For now, enjoy our new promo photo, taken just moments ago.”
The image featured the band’s lineup drawn with exaggerated muscles, dressed in suits and wearing sunglasses.
This response only heightened the anger from the band’s critics. A moderator from Reddit’s r/metalcore page remarked earlier today (May 26) that Ice Nine Kills are now prohibited from being discussed or promoted there.
They expressed: “Fuck AI. Support actual artists.”
The controversy surrounding AI-generated ‘art’ has been a contentious issue since the technology began to gain traction a few years ago. In a 2023 essay for Music Week, Deviate Digital CEO Sammy Andrews labeled AI as a menace to creative professions, warning that it could facilitate copyright violations and erode uniqueness and diversity in music. However, she also acknowledged the potential of the technology as a music-discovery resource.
In 2024, major record labels including Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group filed a lawsuit against AI music creation firms Suno and Udio. The labels claim that utilizing their artists’ music to train AI models amounts to copyright infringement, while the defendants contest that it qualifies as “fair use”.
Ice Nine Kills are currently on tour in North America and are scheduled to perform in Europe during November and December. Frontman Spencer Charnas mentioned to Metal Hammer last year that the band was working on demos for their upcoming studio album, which they hope will not be created via AI.
