Swedish metal band IN FLAMES has brought on UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS drummer Jon Rice for their upcoming spring/summer 2025 European tour. Rice joins the team following the recent exit of Tanner Wayne, who drummed for IN FLAMES over the last seven years.
Today (Thursday, May 29), IN FLAMES posted a photo of their rehearsal sessions with Rice, captioned simply: “Rehearsals”.
Rice is anticipated to make his live debut with IN FLAMES at the first concert of their spring/summer 2025 European tour, which kicks off on June 2 in Tallinn, Estonia.
This isn’t the first significant touring opportunity for Jon. He previously filled in for BEHEMOTH drummer Inferno (real name: Zbigniew Robert Promiński) during their 2017 North American tour with SLAYER, among other dates in 2019 across Israel and Turkey, and the fall 2024 South American tour with ARCH ENEMY.
Rice joined UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS in 2017 and played on the band’s 2018 “Wasteland” studio album. He has also performed with the reactivated THE RED CHORD and the Norwegian black metal band TJUSDER in 2022. Before that, Rice was a member of Arizona death metal group JOB FOR A COWBOY and rockers SCORPION CHILD from Austin, Texas.
Wayne, known for his work with UNDERMINDED, SCARY KIDS SCARING KIDS, and CHIODOS, became part of IN FLAMES ahead of their summer 2018 tour.
Wayne took over for Joe Rickard, who contributed to the band’s 2016 album “Battles”.
On May 27, when IN FLAMES announced Wayne‘s departure, the band shared the following statement on social media: “It is with profound gratitude and appreciation that we announce our creative decision to part ways with Tanner Wayne. His dedication and musicianship over the past several years has made a lasting impact on this band. We wish him nothing but success.”
“Thank you for your support and understanding during this time, and we look forward to seeing you all on tour this summer.”
Tanner made his live debut with IN FLAMES on July 4, 2018, in Brno, Czech Republic.
IN FLAMES continues to tour in support of their latest album, “Foregone”, released in February 2023 via Nuclear Blast. According to a press release, the LP “combines the most aggressive, metallic, and melodic strengths of their landmark records with the advanced songwriting of their contemporary era.”
“Foregone” is the second album with bassist Bryce Paul and Wayne, the first featuring ex-MEGADETH guitarist Chris Broderick, and the third collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Howard Benson (MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THREE DAYS GRACE). Mike Plotnikoff (ALL THAT REMAINS, WARBRINGER) engineered at Benson‘s West Valley Recording Studios. Mixing was done by Joe Rickard (10 YEARS, STARSET, DIAMANTE), who played drums for IN FLAMES from 2016 to 2019.
In 2023, IN FLAMES parted ways with Paul, replacing him with Liam Wilson (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN).
Wilson made his live debut with IN FLAMES on June 7, 2023, at the Release Athens festival in Athens, Greece.
