In a recent interview with Metallerium, heavy horror punk legend Wednesday 13, who is well-known as the frontman of the famous horror punk supergroup MURDERDOLLS, discussed the evolution of the music industry since he began his career over three decades ago. He shared (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “It’s always evolving. Change is inevitable. When MURDERDOLLS formed, it marked the end of an era when large budgets allowed for extensive crews and extravagant tours with two tour buses and quarter-of-a-million-dollar music videos. I was lucky to experience that briefly. Yet, in the last 20 years, everything has shifted dramatically. I’ve adapted to everything. Currently, my band and crew consist of 10 people, which is more than I’ve ever had. If that’s all I have, I’m satisfied. If I can earn a bit more to upgrade my bus or expand my team in the future, that’s great too. But even at my current level, I’m content. I’ve figured out how to make this model work for me by establishing my own rules. Even if I’m not signed to a record label a year from now, I can still tour successfully. I’ve learned to navigate this business, and I intend to stick around for a long time — that’s my hope.”
Wednesday 13‘s latest full-length album, “Mid Death Crisis”, was released on April 25 through Napalm Records.
In a recent chat with Radioactive MikeZ, host of the 96.7 KCAL-FM show “Wired In The Empire”, Wednesday 13 was questioned about how paying homage to MURDERDOLLS during multiple tours in 2023 and 2024 impacted the songwriting for “Mid Death Crisis”. He responded: “Absolutely. Revisiting that music and keeping it fresh in my mind as I began writing definitely shaped the process. I crafted a punk, glam, hard rock album. This isn’t a metal record. The heaviest track is ‘When The Devil Commands’; that’s as heavy metal as it gets. From that point onward, it’s predominantly a rock and roll album. So, that’s what influenced it. This record aligns more closely with my first three albums than my last three. It’s wild because my debut album turns 20 this April. I timed this album’s release to coincide with that milestone — number 10 released 20 years later in the same month. It’s to highlight how far I’ve come since then or how far I’ve traveled, depending on how you want to look at it. But I’m still here, and I believe I still deliver.
Wednesday 13 previously described “Mid Death Crisis” as a fun, campy, “leave-your-brain-at-the-door” party album and a genuine return to his hard-rock roots. Produced by guitarist Alex Kane (LIFE, SEX & DEATH, ENUFF Z’NUFF, ANTIPRODUCT) and mixed by Steve Evetts (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, PRONG, DEVILDRIVER), the album exudes the infectious energy of 1980s sleaze metal, further enhanced by a soaring guest vocal from FASTER PUSSYCAT‘s Taime Downe.
The eerie introduction track “There’s No Such Thing As Monsters” buzzes with energy before the industrial-tinged “Decease And Desist” bursts in full throttle. Wednesday 13‘s signature vocals immediately enter as he navigates the high-speed horror anthem, followed by tracks like “Rotting Away” and “Blood Storm”, which capture audiences with their metallic goth-punk vibes. Featuring FASTER PUSSYCAT‘s Taime Downe on guest vocals, the standout heavy rocker “No Apologies” serves as a fast-paced exorcism of toxic influences, while the triumphant mini-murder ballad “Decapitation” excites listeners with a catchy lead riff before taking an unexpected turn into a theatrical bridge reminiscent of a sinister ’60s sock hop! Ragers like “In Misery”, “Xanaxtasy”, and “Sick And Violent” delve into diverse metal genres, injecting the album with gripping heaviness for all fans, while the downtempo gems “I Hurt You” and “My Funeral” tread into more reflective territory.
