James Lowe, the lead vocalist of the ’60s psychedelic rock band The Electric Prunes, renowned for their Top 10 hit “I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night,” has passed away at the age of 82, as reported by various sources.
After leaving behind the music scene, Lowe embarked on a successful journey as an engineer and producer, collaborating with artists like Sparks and Todd Rundgren. He died on May 22, as confirmed by his family to Variety.
Lowe exited the music industry in the early ’70s, later discovering a new passion in industrial filmmaking, according to Variety.
In the late 1990s, Lowe reformed the Prunes and continued to perform until his passing, as noted by Variety.
In a statement, Lowe’s family shared that he “passed away … from natural causes—suddenly, yet peacefully—surrounded by family and music.”
Lowe embraced the growing nostalgia for his band, performing for enthusiastic audiences in Los Angeles at a “Nuggets” tribute show in 2023, where “I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night” opened the event. He also engaged in retrospective interviews for several rock podcasts recently, according to Variety.
“James left this world peacefully—his heart giving one final electric beat, surrounded by the loving embrace of his family and enveloped by the sounds of his favorite music,” his children Lisa, Cameron, and Skylar stated, according to Variety.
“He was a creative force, a sincere rock star, and a person who lived and loved wholeheartedly. However, the most significant part of James’ life was his 62-year marriage to Pamela, his guiding star and lasting muse. … James was a visionary, a dreamer, and a doer who never ceased creating, exploring, uplifting others, or believing in what was possible,” his family expressed.
