Josh Freese has departed from the Foo Fighters just two years after stepping in for the late Taylor Hawkins.
Freese disclosed this information in a statement on Instagram, stating that the Foo Fighters contacted him earlier this week to inform him that they had chosen “to pursue a different direction with their drummer.” He noted, “No reason was given,” and humorously added, “Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.”

Freese went on to say: “Regardless, I enjoyed the last two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support their decision regarding what’s best for the band. In my 40 years of professional drumming, I’ve never been let go from a group, so while I’m not angry — just a bit shocked and disappointed. However, as many of you know, I’ve always worked freelance and moved between groups, so I’m okay.”
A representative for the Foo Fighters declined to comment. The band has not released a statement nor mentioned who will take Freese’s place. They have not performed live since last fall and have no concerts scheduled for 2025, except for an October 4 performance at the F1 Singapore Grand Prix.
Freese joined the Foo Fighters in May 2023 as they prepared for their first tour following Hawkins’ sudden death in March 2022. He was also among the various drummers who took part in the tribute concert for Hawkins in 2022. Before joining the Foo Fighters, Freese was a sought-after session and live drummer, having performed with a range of artists from Guns N’ Roses and Nine Inch Nails to Paramore and Devo. Currently, he is touring with A Perfect Circle.
