Retired music icon Connie Francis, whose track “Pretty Little Baby” has gone viral on social media, expressed her gratitude that it’s “touching the hearts of millions” decades after its release.
The 87-year-old singer initially recorded the beloved pop song in 1962, but it has recently gained traction with the younger audience on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian have featured the popular track in their posts.
Jenner last shared it on May 12, pairing it with a video of herself snuggling her daughter Stormi while lip-syncing. “I know we’re over this song but I had tooo,” she mentioned in her caption.
In an interview with People, Francis remarked on the song’s revival: “Honestly, I had forgotten the song! I listened to it to refresh my memory. It’s amazing to think that a song I recorded 63 years ago is resonating with millions—it’s truly a remarkable feeling.”
She referred to the situation as “an honor,” adding, “Seeing them pay tribute to me is simply breathtaking.”
When asked about its current appeal, she said: “I believe it carries an innocent and pure message, especially in these chaotic times.”
“It’s incredible. I never imagined this could happen. It feels like a dream come true. To think that children in kindergarten know my name and my music? It’s thrilling!” she shared.
Francis rose to fame during the early 1950s and 1960s, also renowned for hits like “Stupid Cupid,” “Who’s Sorry Now,” and “Frankie.”
Although “Pretty Little Baby” was not a major hit upon its release and wasn’t issued as a single, it gained significant streams earlier this year, reaching 17,000 weekly streams in the U.S. by April and surging to 2.4 million streams weekly by May according to Billboard. It has also amassed 10 billion views on TikTok, hitting No. 1 on the app’s Viral 50 and Top 50 charts.
The song’s viral success has significantly boosted its streaming performance, amassing over 14 million streams worldwide and securing the No. 67 position on Spotify’s Global Top 100. Francis’s label, Republic/UMe, has since re-released versions of the song that she initially recorded in Swedish, Japanese, and various other languages, in hopes of international success.
Overall, Francis is estimated to have sold more than 200 million records globally.
In 1960, she was acknowledged as the most successful female artist in countries such as Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Australia. That same year, she made history as the first woman to achieve a No. 1 ranking on the Billboard Hot 100 with her hit “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.”
She ultimately became the first woman to record three No. 1 hits on the chart, contributing to her total of 53 career singles.
