In a recent interview with Cassius Morris, SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser discussed the potential for a reunion with original frontman Max Cavalera and drummer Igor “Iggor” Cavalera for a concluding show to mark the band’s ongoing farewell tour. He mentioned (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “Yeah, the final show, for sure. The plan is to invite everyone who has been part of SEPULTURA, as musicians—everybody, including roadies and others who played a crucial role at various stages in our career, making this band what it is today. Naturally, this would include the Cavalera brothers, which would be incredible if we could have them jam with us.”
Reflecting on the bitter split with Max Cavalera nearly three decades ago, Andreas noted: “I’m not keen on discussing who’s right or wrong regarding the history and all the chaos we’ve experienced, nor the politics behind it. That’s completely irrelevant. It would be fantastic to simply step on stage, jam for ourselves, our families, and our fans, and celebrate one last gig together. That’s the goal. I hope it happens. Not just with the Cavalera brothers, but also with former SEPULTURA members Jairo [Guedz] and Jean Dolabella, Eloy Casagrande, and Roy Mayorga, along with many other musicians who played important roles in our journey. Regardless of who participates, we’ll celebrate ourselves. If they want to join the party, they’re welcome.”
Kisser added: “We’re not going to reach a consensus point. And it doesn’t matter. A point of agreement is totally unnecessary. What matters is respecting what we have together. It’s a beautiful history. We created something so unique and powerful. It would be amazing to have one last chance to jam for the sake of music. Everything else is just irrelevant.”
When asked about Max‘s recent statement claiming that even though the current SEPULTURA band still uses the name, “everyone knows it’s not the same and never will be,” Andreas responded: “I hope so. [Laughs] Who is the same? Tell me about someone who is the same as they were ten years ago or even yesterday… And who cares? Who cares what he says [about] us? … That’s just not part of who I am or what I live or do. Opinions are all around us. You have your opinion; it’s the same as his or my son’s. Whatever. If you have an opinion, voice it. You’re free to share. So enjoy. [Laughs]”
Andreas also shared insights into his relationship with bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Junior, a member of SEPULTURA since 1984. Kisser mentioned: “Oh, it’s wonderful. Paulo is my brother, since day one. He was the first person I truly connected with in Belo Horizonte. He welcomed me into his home. We lived together for several years, and he’s the godfather to my first child. We’ve shared a journey throughout my time in SEPULTURA, which started in 1987, and we’ve gone through many different experiences together. Our friendship and brotherhood have never been stronger. He’s a far better musician today, having navigated various personal challenges to improve and gain confidence.”
“Alcohol was quite a significant issue within our families and business; it caused many problems,” Andreas elaborated. “Now we don’t drink. I’ve been alcohol-free for five years. Paulo has been around three or four years without it. Derrick [Green, SEPULTURA singer] hasn’t drunk for six years. It’s fantastic, man. It’s the best decision. He’s playing better than ever and is a better person—more focused and engaged. We wake up without a hangover, and we’ve saved a ton of money not spending it on alcohol. So yes, we support each other. We are family. Paulo is essentially the main reason we’re still here. We’ve seen so many changes in SEPULTURA‘s journey, and he’s the only one who has been present since the very beginning. It’s amazing.”
SEPULTURA is preparing a live album that will commemorate their final tour. The band is set to record 40 songs across 40 different cities for what they describe as a “massive compilation of our most energetic moments on stage,” according to a statement released by SEPULTURA in December 2023.
SEPULTURA kicked off its farewell tour on March 1, 2024, at Arena Hall in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The sold-out performance marked the debut of drummer Greyson Nekrutman, who previously played with SUICIDAL TENDENCIES.
SEPULTURA announced the departure of drummer Eloy Casagrande on February 27, 2024, explaining in a statement that he was leaving to join “another project.” Eloy later confirmed he is the new drummer for SLIPKNOT.
The announcement of Eloy‘s exit from SEPULTURA came just two months after the band declared its plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2024 with a “farewell tour” that will span the globe.
SEPULTURA experienced a fractured relationship in 1996 with the exit of Max, following a split with the vocalist/guitarist’s wife, Gloria, who served as their manager. Max‘s brother, drummer Igor, stayed with the band for another decade before departing SEPULTURA to reunite with Max in CAVALERA CONSPIRACY.
Although SEPULTURA has maintained a dedicated fan base worldwide throughout nearly four decades, albums from the Max era, such as “Roots” and “Chaos A.D.”, have been the band’s most commercially successful, with both achieving gold certification in the U.S. for sales exceeding five hundred thousand copies.
In December 2023, SEPULTURA announced plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary by launching a “farewell tour” that will cover the entire globe.
