In a recent interview with Brazil’s Ibagenscast, former NIGHTWISH vocalist Tarja Turunen was questioned about whether she misses aspects of her time with the band. Her response (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET) was: “Actually, I don’t. I don’t. Because the music remains. It lives in my heart. It lives out there. It will be forever. That will be forever. But everything else, I don’t miss. I might say ‘unfortunately’, in a way. I spent — what? — nearly nine years with the band. I’ve been a solo artist for the last 20 years. So, that time with NIGHTWISH wasn’t so long. We made great albums and music together, but I have to admit we were not happy.”
“What matters most to me is happiness,” she elaborated. “Even with the people I work with now, I want everyone around me to be happy. It’s so crucial because if you go through life without feeling happiness… Music is an emotion, and it starts consuming you. You need to find that love within you. For me, music was my first true love. And if I can’t genuinely express myself with that love inside me, it’s not a good situation. I’m not in a good place.”
When asked if she plans to release a follow-up to her last rock solo album, “In The Raw”, which debuted in 2019, Tarja replied: “Actually, we are gradually starting to produce the new record. Of course, I still have a lot of touring to do; until September, I’ll be more or less on the road. I need to start writing the lyrics for the album in September, and the production will begin around the same time. But we have already started, so the songs are ready. Yes, it’s coming. I’m really excited. I hope you’ll enjoy my work because I think it will be a very, very nice album.”
Turunen was dismissed from NIGHTWISH at the conclusion of the band’s 2005 tour through an open letter published on the NIGHTWISH website simultaneously. The letter stated: “To you, unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with emotions have become much more significant.”
NIGHTWISH keyboardist and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen later described the decision to part ways with Turunen as “the most difficult thing I ever had to do.” In reflection, Tarja noted that the manner of her exit showed that her former bandmates weren’t truly her friends. “Maybe one day I’ll forgive, but I will never forget,” she stated.
In 2019, Turunen dismissed online speculation regarding her potential return to NIGHTWISH following her onstage reunion with the band’s then-bassist/vocalist Marko “Marco” Hietala during a “Raskasta Joulua” concert in Hämeenlinna, Finland.
“I know a lot of fans would love for something to transpire, but it’s a very long shot,” she told Kerrang! magazine. “Personally, I don’t foresee anything happening with them, to be completely honest. Marco joined the band later; he wasn’t there from the beginning. He was always someone I was close to. As for [NIGHTWISH keyboardist/leader] Tuomas Holopainen, we haven’t seen each other in quite a while… but we’ve kept in touch. It’s not negative. The past is what it is; we can’t alter that. We can only change what lies ahead.”
NIGHTWISH‘s authorized biography, “Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996-2006”, was released in Finnish in 2006 and translated into English three years later.
Turunen‘s husband, Marcelo Cabuli, along with his business partners, subsequently sued the individuals behind the book for defamation. The lawsuit named the publishing house Like Kustannus Oy and the book’s author, Marko “Mape” Ollila. Cabuli and his Brazilian partners contended that the book contained false claims and insinuations that had led to their suffering and financial difficulties.
The book attributed the reasons for Turunen‘s dramatic expulsion from the band in late 2005 to Cabuli.
In 2011, the Helsinki District Court dismissed Cabuli‘s lawsuit, ruling that the book, which criticized Cabuli on only a few of its 380 pages, did not negatively influence his work or reputation in South America. Furthermore, the court found that Ollila did not maliciously depict Cabuli in a negative manner.
