Dave Navarro recently declared in an interview that there is “no chance” for Jane’s Addiction to reunite again after a viral altercation during a performance brought the band to an abrupt halt.
In a conversation with Guitar Player, Navarro was asked about his least favorite gig throughout his extensive career. He quickly identified, “It would be a gig last September, on Friday the 13th, in Boston.”
On that fateful night, during an incident that gained traction on social media, Jane’s Addiction’s “Core Four” reunion came to a swift end when singer Perry Farrell confronted Navarro onstage; the band subsequently canceled the rest of the tour, citing a “continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell.”
Navarro shared with Guitar Player that the band’s European reunion performances with bassist Eric Avery were “some of my favorite Jane’s Addiction gigs of all-time.”
“There was no nonsense: No props, no frills onstage. No dancing, no pyro, and no gimmicks,” Navarro remarked.
“I’ll say that the time before that [Boston] gig, when we were in Europe and truly connecting for the first time — because at our ages, in our 50s and 60s, everyone’s done what they needed to do, and we weren’t competing with one another — we were getting along. There was no ego; it was just four guys creating amazing music, just like in the early days. It was just us on stage, with the crowd going wild,” said the guitarist.
However, everything shifted in Boston. Though Navarro preferred not to “name names and assign blame,” he reflected on the experience, saying, “There was an onstage altercation, and all the hard work, creativity, writing, and hours in the studio vanished in an instant, leaving behind the destruction of the band’s future. There’s no chance for the band to ever perform together again.”
He added, “That gig, September 13th, in Boston, marked the end of everything. For that reason, it is my least favorite gig I have ever played.”
Following the breakup of Jane’s Addiction, Navarro has continued to collaborate with his bandmates Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins, although the now-trio has not released any new music so far.
