The Who and their drummer Zak Starkey appear to have parted ways once more.
Following their initial separation announcement last month, which was quickly overturned, The Who’s guitarist and songwriter, Pete Townshend, posted on Instagram Sunday that Ringo Starr’s son has once again split from the band.
“After many years of excellent drumming from Zak, the moment has come for a change,” Townshend stated. “It’s a reflective time. Zak has numerous exciting projects ahead, and I wish him all the best.”
Nevertheless, Starkey, who had been with The Who since their 1996 Quadrophenia tour, responded on social media shortly after, asserting that he was told to claim it was his choice to leave the band this time, but that “this would be untrue.”
“I was dismissed two weeks after being reinstated and was asked to make a statement that I had left The Who to pursue other musical opportunities; this would be a lie,” Starkey wrote on his Instagram. “I love The Who and would never have quit. So I didn’t make the statement… Leaving The Who would also have let down all the incredible people who supported me (thank you all a million times over and more) throughout the chaos of my going ‘in and out and in and out like a bleedin’ squeezebox.”
In mid-April, The Who announced that Starkey was no longer part of the band following a disagreement during their performance at Royal Albert Hall in March, with their representative describing it as a “collective decision to part ways.”
A few days later, Townshend updated his Instagram to reveal Starkey’s return. “There were some communication issues, personal and private, from all sides that needed resolution, and these have been addressed amicably,” he wrote at the time. “Roger and I would like Zak to refine his recently evolved drumming style to suit our non-orchestral lineup, and he has gladly accepted. I take responsibility for some of the confusion.” However, the drummer’s comeback clearly did not last long.
