From content conflicts and production delays to the necessity of reuniting for further filming, Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, is facing significant challenges en route to theaters. Reports indicate that Lionsgate and producer Graham King are gearing up for an extensive 22-day shoot for additional photography in June. This amount of extra footage is substantial, pushing the production budget to new heights.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the call for additional footage emerged after the Jackson Estate and studio partners Lionsgate and Universal struggled over a legal issue regarding specific elements of the film. With delays and ambiguity over what should be included or excluded, Fuqua’s Michael might be divided into two parts.
According to THR, a script for a possible sequel is yet to be finalized, with the June shoot contributing to the first film. While there are murmurs about “reshoots,” THR clarifies that this is more about capturing extra footage rather than revisiting previously filmed scenes in order to create a complete feature. Sources reveal that the new film will conclude with Jackson departing from the Jackson 5 following the release of his debut studio album, Off the Wall.
A production insider has dismissed earlier reports, stating, “The Michael Jackson biopic is not in total chaos. The sensational headlines about the production halting are simply untrue. The film is progressing, and reshoots are set for March.”
The cast of Michael features Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Miles Teller as longtime attorney John Branca, Juliano Krue Valdi as young Michael Jackson, and Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, as the adult version of the pop icon. Antoine Fuqua is directing from a script penned by John Logan. We got our first glimpse of Jaafar Jackson in costume as his legendary uncle last year, and the resemblance is striking.
