Alex Warren has accomplished a remarkable achievement on the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart with his track “Ordinary” (May 16).
With its ninth consecutive week at No. 1, he has become the longest-standing U.S. male solo artist on the chart in over 70 years, overtaking Elvis Presley. The King had an eight-week run at the top in 1960 with “It’s Now or Never,” part of his 21 No. 1 hits in the U.K.
Florida native Slim Whitman held the No. 1 position for 11 weeks in 1955 with “Rose Marie,” the theme song from the 1954 western film starring Ann Blyth and Howard Keel.
Currently in its 13th week on the Billboard Hot 100, “Ordinary” has risen to No. 2, closely following Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther,” which has held the top spot for 12 weeks. Additionally, “Ordinary” has reached No. 1 on the Global 200 for a second week in a row.
In a January interview with Billboard, Warren spoke about drawing inspiration from difficult moments in his life, including the loss of both of his parents and a period of homelessness, for his music.
“I recently started doing this thing where I write about those [experiences], and I try to take control in a way,” he explained. “For me, something really beautiful is taking something so sad and dark, and what most would view as something that ruined their life, and turn it into something that can help people.”
The rest of the top five remains mostly stable, with Ravyn Lenae’s “Love Me Not” (No. 2), Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” (No. 3), and WizTheMC and Bees & Honey’s “Show Me Love” (No. 4) all keeping their places from last week.
Sombr’s breakout track “Undressed” enters the top five for the first time (No. 5), moving up one spot from the previous week, while his song “Back to Friends” climbs three places to No. 12.
The highest new entry of the week comes from Calvin Harris and Clementine Douglas, as their collaboration “Blessings” debuts at No. 8. This achievement marks Harris’s 45th top 10 hit.
