Cheryl Baker has joyfully announced that The Fizz, a spin-off from the legendary Eurovision-winning band Bucks Fizz, will be celebrated in a biopic 44 years after their iconic victory with the catchy song Making Your Mind Up.
The original group, featuring Cheryl, Mike Nolan, Jay Aston, and Bobby G, achieved the UK’s fourth Eurovision win in 1981, launching them into fame.
Even though the group has experienced line-up changes and rebranded as The Fizz due to legal disputes among the original members, they have consistently entertained their fans.
Following Mike Nolan’s exit last year for personal reasons, Cheryl and Jay now perform alongside Nikk Mager and Matthew Pateman as The Fizz.
Bobby G’s departure from Bucks Fizz was linked to a variety of factors, including ambitions for a solo career, disagreements over the band’s name, and legal conflicts with his bandmates, according to the Mirror.
At the WhichBingo Awards, Cheryl expressed her excitement about the forthcoming documentary, saying: “Someone is making a documentary about us.”
“They have been capturing our journey, including Mike Nolan’s final performance, so you can look forward to a biopic of Fizz in the not-too-distant future. How amazing is that?”.
Cheryl also mentioned that The Fizz has been revitalized with the addition of Nikk and Matthew, providing the band with a new “lease of life”.
Looking back, she observed the change in the band’s direction, remarking: “The wonderful thing now is that we’re not focused on chart success. Back then, everything revolved around the charts, promoting new singles, and releasing albums, while others managed everything for us.
“We felt like four puppets to be honest in the 1980s, but now we control our own path. We still record, but we do it on our terms and at our pace. Our gigs are so much more enjoyable.
“I want to highlight Matthew and Nikk, who have joined me and Jay from Bucks Fizz. They’re incredible, with fantastic voices, energy, and enthusiasm, which elevates our performance when collaborating with such talented individuals. It’s like a new lease of life for the band, and I’m genuinely enjoying it.”
Despite being in the entertainment industry for over four decades, Cheryl, 71, affirmed that she has no plans to retire.
Revealing the secret to her enduring career, she noted: “It’s about staying active and keeping your name out there.”
“I was fortunate that after Eurovision, I transitioned into television, making my face recognizable throughout the nineties, and then in the 2000s I reconnected with The Fizz and participated in reality TV shows.
“Many of my peers have retired, but I have no intention of doing so; I have too much fun.”
