Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has won the hearts of fans with her eighth studio album “Cowboy Carter,” recognized as a standout in the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs).
At this year’s AMAs, broadcast live from Las Vegas on May 26, Beyoncé clinched two more country awards. The acclaimed singer, with 35 Grammy wins to her name, took home the favorite female country artist and favorite country album accolades for her innovative project. This marked her debut nominations in these categories, which were not televised.
She was also nominated for album of the year, with Billie Eilish taking home that award and winning all seven categories she was nominated in.
Throughout the ceremony, country music was a prominent topic, especially when Megan Moroney and “Cowboy Carter” collaborator Shaboozey presented the favorite country duo or group award.
During their presentation, Shaboozey acknowledged the legendary African-American country singer Charley Pride, who won best country album and favorite male artist in 1974. Moroney shared that in 1974, the favorite female artist award was given to Lynn Anderson, while the Carter Family won for favorite country duo or group, highlighting their foundational role in country music.
Shaboozey appeared momentarily startled as Moroney spoke. While the Carter Family significantly influenced country music history, they weren’t the genre’s inventors.
This highlighted the misconceptions that continue to surround country music, often sidelining the essential contributions made by Black artists and people of color. Beyoncé’s work has been instrumental in shedding light on these themes, revealing the genre’s ongoing reluctance to evolve.
As fans may recall, Beyoncé revealed the album during a surprise Super Bowl commercial in 2024, introducing singles “16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ‘Em.”
The 27-track project has significantly boosted the conversation surrounding Black country artists and the genre’s origins, shattering numerous records along the way. With this album, Beyoncé emerged as the foremost nominee at the 2025 Grammy Awards, garnering nominations in both the country and American roots categories for the first time.
She ultimately won album of the year and best country duo/group performance for “II Most Wanted” alongside Miley Cyrus. Moreover, Beyoncé received the best country album award for “Cowboy Carter.” This marked the first time a Black woman has earned that recognition.
Beyoncé is currently on her Cowboy Carter and Rodeo Chitlin’ Circuit Tour, a spectacular showcase of fashion, diverse music genres, and strong political undertones. The song “Freedom” features prominently in this extensive setlist.
The nine-city tour will traverse the U.S. and Europe, culminating in a grand finale in Las Vegas on July 26.
