Indeed, New Jersey is not for the faint-hearted. Bruce Springsteen has intensified his feud with Donald Trump by releasing an entire live EP filled with anti-Trump sentiments. Per Variety, the collection includes songs and passionately charged introductions from the opening night of his latest tour. Recorded in Manchester on May 14, Land of Hope and Dreamsfeatures four tracks along with two fiery speeches. These remarks led Trump to respond with erratic posts on Truth Social, echoing generalized frustration over issues like Columbus Day. How did the relationship between the Boss and the President turn so sour? Here’s a complete timeline of their feud.
1984:President Ronald Reagan completely misinterprets Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” which drives the Boss to become more politically active, as stated by biographer Marc Dolan. Rather than being about hope, the song narrates the struggles of a disillusioned veteran, yet Reagan dubbed it inspirational. This incident spurred Springsteen to voice his pro-labor beliefs more openly and to support fundraising efforts for left-leaning organizations at his performances.
2008: Springsteen takes the stage for Obama at concerts across the Rust Belt. “After the calamity of the last eight years, we need someone to guide us in an American restoration,” he remarked at one event. The year prior, he had also embarked on an anti-Bush tour alongside several other musicians.
2021: Springsteen and former president Barack Obama co-host a podcast, aptly titled “Born in the USA,” which is bound to irk Reagan’s legacy.
September 2016:During an interview with Rolling Stone,Springsteen declares “The republic is under threat from a fool,” referring to Trump in the midst of what would become a successful presidential campaign. “This whole situation is tragic. Without exaggeration, it’s a calamity for our democracy… The concepts he is mainstreaming are extremely dangerous, notably white nationalism and the alt-right. His outrageous actions, like not immediately condemning David Duke, are unprecedented for political candidates.” Later that year, he terms Trump a “conman” during an appearance on the BBC and performs at a Hillary Clinton rally.
2020:Springsteen dedicates his SiriusXM show to advocating for Joe Biden, featuring an entire episode named “Farewell to the Thief” that critiques the incumbent and claims his administration poses “the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime.”
October 2024: Springsteen throws his support behind Kamala Harris in an Instagram video, asserting that Trump’s “disregard for the sanctity of our Constitution, democracy, the rule of law, and the peaceful transfer of power disqualifies him from ever holding the presidency again.” Later that month, he rallies for Harris in Philadelphia and Georgia.
May 14, 2025:Springsteen addresses Trump 2.0 during his opening show of the European tour. “The mighty E Street Band is here tonight to invoke the righteous power of art, music, and rock ’n’ roll in these perilous times,” he stated while introducing “Land of Hope and Dreams.” He referred to the Trump administration as “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous.”
In response to Springsteen’s comments, Trump labeled him a “withered ‘prune’ of a rocker,” claiming his skin had “atrophied.” On Truth Social, he remarked, “Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he’s not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who ardently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who nearly destroyed our Country.” Earlier, Trump also claimed that Taylor Swift was “no longer ‘HOT’,” which is just as preposterous as suggesting Springsteen needs advice on skincare. The man radiates health.
May 21, 2025:Springsteen unveils the Land of Hope and DreamsEP. In response, Trump posts a fan edit of himself hitting a golf ball, seemingly causing Springsteen to stumble on stage.
