In a chat with Australian Musician, Ben Weinman, the guitarist of The Dillinger Escape Plan, shared his thoughts on the band’s legacy.

It’s quite strange, because I just completed an interview with a young guy hosting a radio show focused on metal and hardcore. He mentioned that he doubted his show would exist without us, as many bands he admired were influenced by our work. That notion seems impossible to me; it feels surreal.
It’s odd to belong to a band that I feel never truly achieved mainstream success, yet almost daily, someone expresses how much our music resonates with them or how it has inspired their own band. It often triggers a substantial sense of imposter syndrome. It’s hard to fathom that anyone would even appreciate this music, but nearly every day I receive a wonderful reminder that perhaps we did create something meaningful for some people.
After reuniting for shows to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Calculating Infinity, their first performance together since 2017, The Dillinger Escape Plan has been more active than ever, hinting at new music with original vocalist Dmitri Minakakis.
When queried by Metal-Roos about their reunion performances, Weinman remarked:
Initially, we hadn’t considered doing any shows since our last ones. Then we received an offer to perform at a special festival celebrating our debut album with our original vocalist. At that time, it didn’t feel right; we weren’t prepared. But it became a humorous idea. I spoke to our booking agent, mentioning that my friend had contacted me about headlining this festival, and he said, “Next year marks the 25th anniversary of that album. If you were to do something, that would be pretty cool.” I thought, “Hmm, that would be great.” I definitely wanted to collaborate with our original singer again since he remains one of my closest friends, and he never fully experienced the band’s success. In the end, it made sense.
On their reunion setlist:
We’re performing these shows with our original singer, who was absent for most of our discography. He contributed to our first two EPs and our debut album. So we’re playing the entire first album — the full Calculating Infinity — plus the EP prior to that and selections from the first EP, maybe even a cover. It’s primarily older material, yet it feels remarkably fresh.
When discussing the dynamics of their reunion:
We didn’t part ways due to conflict, but we certainly felt fatigued and thought we had completed our journey. Afterward, we didn’t interact much. However, Dimitri and I remained friends, staying in touch. When we reunited for rehearsals, it was incredibly positive and enjoyable.
Engaging in something after several years, without the pressure of obligation, allows for a greater appreciation of each other and the opportunities we have now. With the experiences and maturity gained from life — raising children and navigating various challenges — we realize how fortunate we are. This mindset has transformed the experience into something truly enjoyable. We’re genuinely having a fantastic time.
