Sabrina Carpenter is poised to dominate the summer once again, just as she did with “Espresso.” The pop sensation has unveiled her new single, “Manchild.”
Produced by her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, the song kicks off with a playful “Oh boy!” as Carpenter exudes vibrant disco vibes while taking a jab at her love interest. “Manchild, why you always come a-runnin’ to me?/Fuck my life, won’t you let an innocent woman be?” she belts in the chorus. “Never heard of self care/Half your brain just ain’t there/Manchild, why you always come a-runnin’, takin’ all my lovin’ from me?”
Could this be the ultimate summer anthem? Oh boy, absolutely.
Carpenter teased “Manchild” with a clip featuring herself in Daisy Dukes, a white button-up, and heels, hitching a ride on a dusty road with a suitcase while saying “Oh boy!” Following her previous marketing tactics like last year’s Coachella, she also utilized billboards to promote the single, and shared a reel of herself performing the opening lines of Lana Del Rey’s “Norman Fucking Rockwell”: “Goddamn, manchild.” Catch the reference?
The music video for the new single will premiere on Friday at 10 a.m. ET.
In an Instagram update post-release, Carpenter shared behind-the-scenes shots from the upcoming video, mentioning that she wrote “Manchild” “on a random Tuesday with Amy and Jack shortly after finishing *Short n’ Sweet*, and it turned out to be the best random Tuesday of my life.”
She reflected that “Manchild” serves as “a soundtrack for the chaotic yet enjoyable young adult years of life,” adding, “it embodies the spirit of a loving eye roll and feels like a never-ending summer road trip! That’s why I wanted you to hear it now—so you can hang your head out the window and let loose all summer long!”
The Grammy winner humorously concluded her message to fans and “manchildren” with, “thank you always and forever for listening and thank you men for testing me!”
Carpenter is set to release “Manchild” on a 7-inch single, featuring the B-side “inside of your head when you’ve just won an argument with a man.” This marks her first new music since the deluxe edition of Short n’ Sweet, which included a duet with Dolly Parton titled “Please Please Please,” as well as fan favorites “Busy Woman,” “15 Minutes,” “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder,” and “Bad Reviews.”
“Manchild” debuts just before Carpenter headlines Primavera Sound 2025 in Barcelona, alongside Charli XCX and Chappell Roan. She will perform two nights at London’s Hyde Park, followed by appearances at festivals Lollapalooza (Aug. 3) and Austin City Limits (Oct. 4 and Oct. 11). In the fall, she will commence a new North American leg of her *Short n’ Sweet* tour, including a return to Madison Square Garden for three performances.
