Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage has offered high praise for his almost namesake band, Nicolas Cage Fighter.
In a recent conversation with The Guardian, the star of Face/Off, Mandy, and Con Air shared that he not only knows of the Australian hardcore band but also considers himself a fan, even quoting their lyrics.
“I am acquainted with a hard rock band from Australia called Nicolas Cage Fighter, and I think they’re fantastic,” Cage remarked, whose latest film is The Surfer. “Their music is empowering. The lyrics emphasize taking responsibility for your actions, never being a victim, and finding ways to solve your problems. ‘Re-evaluate your life/Focus on yourself/Look me in the eyes again/Tell me that none of this is your fault.’ They don’t shy away from writing about the necessity of owning up to your mistakes.”
Cage’s enthusiasm for metal and hardcore music comes as no surprise. He is friends with Rob Zombie and Kirk Hammett, and his son Weston was previously a member of Eyes Of Noctum and Arsh Anubis.
“Weston introduced me to the black metal scene that’s so prevalent in Norway,” Cage stated to Metal Hammer in 2018, around the release of his avant-garde, metal-inspired horror film Mandy. “Black metal often gets a bad reputation due to the church burnings in the early 90s, but the music itself has its roots in classical music! Weston was listening to bands like Dimmu Borgir, and I thought the vocalists were incredible, with a sound influenced by classical music. It’s fascinating how it derives from composers like Bach, Wagner, and Beethoven. Many music genres can’t claim that, as most have origins in gospel and African music.”
Nicolas Cage Fighter released their last album, The Bones That Grew From Pain, in 2022. “Unleashing a powerful arsenal of groove-heavy riffs, the four-piece expertly blends contemporary death metal with the relentless energy of classic 90s hardcore,” wrote Metal Hammer in their 7/10 review.
The band is set to drop a new album in 2025.
