Joe Jonas and Aly & AJ are putting to rest any speculation that “Potential Breakup Song” is about the DNCE frontman, as the trio shared a funny TikTok on Tuesday (May 20).
In the video posted on Jonas’ account, he pretends to be on a phone call while singing the lyrics to the 2007 classic. “It took too long, it took too long, it took too long for you to call back,” he sings, before the camera shifts to the Michalka sisters, who join in with the next lines: “And normally I would just forget that/ Except for the fact it was my birthday.”
In the final moments, the camera pulls back to show all three former Disney Channel stars delivering the song’s famous line: “My stupid birthday!”
In his caption, the Camp Rockalum noted, “Ok but I’d never do that on your birthday @Aly and AJ.” The Michalka sisters replied, “And yet they STILL think it’s about you.”
The actors’ comments allude to a longstanding theory that “Potential Breakup Song” was inspired by Jonas, who AJ dated during their teenage years. The sisters clarified in a 2020 interview with Business Insiderthat the song was never meant to refer to any specific individual.
“We just thought, ‘Let’s write a breakup song,’” AJ explained. “We didn’t expect it to become a breakup anthem, but that’s how it turned out, which is pretty great.”
Aly & AJ first connected with the JoBros while both groups were associated with Disney, with the sisters starring in the Disney Channel movie Cow Belles and the JoBros — including Joe’s brothers, Nick and Kevin — headlining two Camp Rock films and a series called Jonas. In January on Call Her Daddy, AJ reminisced about dating Joe for a year and a half, mentioning that their first kiss happened in a bowling alley. “It was so innocent,” she recalled. “It was sweet.”
