In an alternate reality, Miley Cyrus‘s legendary Bangerz era would’ve been completed with an outrageous music video featuring Madonna, Nelly, and other superstars indulging in wheelies and mud wrestling. Sadly, we are not in that reality.
During an interview on the Every Single Album podcast released on Thursday (June 5), the “Flowers” artist disclosed that she was intent on gathering a star-studded lineup of friends to create a raucous visual for “4×4,” a track from her hit 2013 album that never became a single. “I had everyone lined up,” Cyrus recounted. “Nelly … Madonna was on board for the video, Miranda Cosgrove.”
“This was before Taylor [Swift] had a bunch of celebrities in her squad,” she went on, chuckling. “I was friends with famous people first. I wanted to do that. I had an amazing crew, and my crew was really, really impressive.”
Cyrus mentioned that the idea was eventually shut down by RCA, her record label at the time, who quipped that they didn’t want her “talking about a pit bull [and] pee” in a song they were marketing. “Madonna was ready to mud wrestle with Miranda Kerr,” the Grammy winner recalled wistfully. “I was like, ‘I’m going to gather all these girls, all these supermodels, all these Victoria’s Secret models and pop icons to come to my dad’s farm, hop in the back of 4x4s, we’re going to mud wrestle, and then do doughnuts.’”
Even without a “4×4” video, Bangerz remains one of Cyrus’ most triumphant albums. The LP debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and introduced her first-ever No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, “Wrecking Ball,” closely followed by “We Can’t Stop” at No. 2.
The “Party in the U.S.A.” singer was signed to RCA for a three-album contract, later releasing Younger Now in 2017 and Plastic Hearts in 2020 under the Sony Music label. In 2021, she signed a new deal with Columbia Records and recently released her new album Something Beautiful on May 30.
Later in the podcast episode, Cyrus shared another instance where she and her former label were not aligned. She mentioned that she never would’ve included a certain fellow pop star on “Prisoner,” one of the singles from Plastic Hearts. “No shade to Dua Lipa, it just doesn’t fit with the album,” Cyrus said candidly.
“She would’ve been much more suited for something like [2023 LP] Endless Summer Vacation,” the singer added regarding Dua Lipa. “She would’ve been fantastic on ‘Wildcard,’ or any of them — ‘River,’ can you imagine?”
Cyrus also noted that she felt her RCA team wasn’t entirely convinced about how Plastic Hearts would perform, so they brought in some “medicinal Dua” to give the album a boost. “They basically were like, ‘Oh, fantastic, here’s this piece of junk album she gave us, let’s sprinkle a little Dua Lipa on there,’” Cyrus said, laughing.
