John Fogerty has re-recorded a collection of classic Creedence Clearwater Revival tracks for an upcoming album titled Legacy: the Creedence Clearwater Revival Years, set to release on August 22 through Concord.
In a nod to pop sensation Taylor Swift, who has launched “Taylor’s Version” of four of her albums after struggling to acquire the rights to her original masters, Fogerty is branding his new recordings as “John’s Versions.” However, unlike Swift, he does retain ownership of his own master recordings.
“For most of my life, I didn’t own the songs I created,” Fogerty states. “Regaining them transforms everything. Legacy is my way to honor that—performing these songs on my own terms, with my loved ones.”
These loved ones consist of Fogerty’s sons Shane and Tyler, who both play guitar, alongside drummer Matt Chamberlain, keyboardist Bob Malone, bassist Bob Glaub, and saxophonist Rob Stone. Shane also co-produced the album with his father, while executive producer responsibilities were handled by Fogerty Sr.’s wife, Julie.
“I witnessed firsthand how significant it was for John to reclaim his publishing rights,” Julie explains. “It’s been immensely joyful and beautiful since this change. This is a celebration of his life’s work—the ultimate victory for a good guy and artist.”
The initial offerings from Fogerty’s effort are now out, featuring new renditions of Creedence’s Up Around The Bend and Have You Ever Seen The Rain available on streaming platforms, along with a “John’s Version” remake of Porterville, originally recorded by Creedence when they were known as The Golliwogs in 1967. All three tracks can be found below, along with the album’s tracklist.
Earlier in 2023, Fogerty regained control over his back catalog after a lengthy legal battle that spanned five decades.
“I never thought this would be possible,” Fogerty remarked at that time. “After 50 years, I’m finally back with my songs. I also get to decide how and where my music is used. Until this year, that was something I had never been able to do.”
Legacy: the Creedence Clearwater Revival Years isavailable for pre-order now.Fogerty will perform the second of his two shows celebrating his 80th birthday this evening (May 29) at New York’s Beacon Theatre and is scheduled to appear at the UK’s Glastonbury Festival in June.
