I must confess – the Sleep Token album was not quite what it appeared to be. At first glance, it seemed as if Sleep Token had lost its touch. Tracks like “Caramel” and “Damocles” painted a misleading picture of the album, almost deceptive. However, for some listeners, this could be the record where they decide to disembark from the Sleep Token experience.
Upon further investigation into its notably progressive sound, Sleep Token has transformed metal into a more accessible format, with the potential to reach a broader audience. Definitely leaning towards the pop spectrum, they blend elements of jazz, hip-hop, trap, blues, and even country into their music, making it surprisingly enjoyable.
In terms of the band’s metal roots, the opening track, “Look To Windward,” quickly redeemed the two lackluster singles. With a cinematic quality that’s hard to believe, Sleep Token backs their sound with orchestration, allowing melodies to emerge from their heavy riffs – the very first song runs nearly 8 minutes long.
And I’m not alone in experiencing either an epiphany or sheer delight with Sleep Token recently. They have secured their first ever #1 album in the UK with Even in Arcadia, and it’s projected to debut at #1 in the US with over 120,000 units sold. This record also marked their first ARIA #1 album in Australia, along with hitting #1 in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, and Scotland.
No matter the opinions, this is a significant achievement for any metal band. Whether they’re helping the public embrace the color black along with some chugging riffs or simply resonating with a wider audience as our variables dissolve, we won’t question the feat. #1 is #1.
Congratulations, Sleep Token.
