The first single I purchased
I Don’t Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats, acquired from Sounds Nice on Birtley High Street during my teenage years. Although I was aware it dealt with a school shooting, I resonated with its message about Mondays.
The first song that captured my heart
Still in Love With You from Thin Lizzy’s Live and Dangerous album. As I learned to play the drums, I was captivated by Brian Downey’s exquisite shuffle beat in this relatively slow track. His artistry is inspiring, and I’ve maintained my passion for drumming all these years.
The song I enjoy in secret
I have a soft spot for a few Eagles songs, particularly Desperado, especially the scene where Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski says: “I hate the fuckin’ Eagles, man!” I probably shouldn’t admit this since I’ve been collaborating with a band called Groove Train and I’m currently invited to play percussion for the Bootleg Eagles.
The song I perform at karaoke
The Royal Mile and Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty and Take the Money and Run by the Steve Miller Band are songs that fit my vocal range. Yet, I’m not much of a frequent karaoke participant.
The song I somehow know every word to
While sitting in the park enjoying music, China in Your Hand by T’Pau and I Want to Be Free by Toyah Willcox played. Even after not hearing them for decades, I could still recall the lyrics. My memory works that way; I can even remember my friends’ parents’ phone numbers.
The song that transformed my life
John Bonham’s drumming on When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin is nothing less than legendary. They supposedly recorded it in a stairwell, which inspired me to aspire to be like John Bonham.
The song I can’t bear to listen to anymore
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack evokes memories of lost love.
The song that motivates me each morning
Gimme Some Lovin’ by the Spencer Davis Group.
The ultimate party song
Ain’t Nobody by Rufus and Chaka Khan—it’s just that good.

The song that brings me to tears
On the Wire by Troy Cassar-Daley tells a poignant story of losing one’s way and sense of belonging, depicting the challenges of modern loneliness, love, and comfort.
The ideal song for a motorcycle ride
Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. It’s the perfect soundtrack for a thrilling ride.
