Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun and 2PM’s Taecyeon, the leads of the upcoming drama “The First Night With The Duke,” joined forces for a pictorial and interview with Esquire Korea!
After a photo shoot themed around their drama, the two stars engaged in an open discussion.
Initially discussing their hobbies—Seohyun enjoys playing the piano, while Taecyeon has a passion for cooking—the dialogue transitioned to their off-screen relationship. When asked if they were familiar prior to filming, Seohyun shared, “We weren’t close, more like acquaintances who would occasionally say hello. During my promotions on music shows, I was the youngest in my group and quite reserved, making it difficult for me to approach other groups.”
Taecyeon chimed in, “I recognized her face often, so I felt a sense of familiarity internally, but we hadn’t had a genuine conversation before.”

They reflected on how their perceptions of each other shifted throughout the filming process. “She’s not the same Seohyun I recall,” Taecyeon noted. “She used to appear quiet and shy, but now she exudes confidence and strength.”
Seohyun remarked, “Even though we hadn’t spoken before, I had heard from other Girls’ Generation members that he was kind and approachable. I felt no anxiety before filming; I was actually excited. As you probably noticed during the photo shoot, he’s very focused when necessary but also playful and energetic during downtime.”
The mutual admiration continued. Seohyun commented, “[Taecyeon] brings such lively energy. I believe viewers will feel that too. Even when not on camera, he remained in character and sustained his energy for his fellow actors, helping us fully engage in the scenes. I particularly admired the genuine intensity in his eyes. Despite juggling various aspects of his acting, he created a wonderful atmosphere on set as a true mood-maker, and I was very appreciative.”
Taecyeon echoed the praise for Seohyun’s portrayal. “Her character Cha Sun Chaek is quite intricate and challenging to embody, as she’s the only one who travels through time from the modern era to the past. I was curious about how she would interpret it after reading the script and original webtoon. But she surpassed my expectations—truly, I was quite impressed.”

When questioned about the most memorable moments during filming, Taecyeon was cautious not to reveal too much. “The fireworks scene… discussing it may spoil the plot. The battle scenes were also notable, but since the drama hasn’t aired yet, I can’t elaborate too much.”
In contrast, Seohyun shared a moment that resonated with her. “Given the title of the drama, the scene where we share our first night together stands out significantly to me,” she mentioned. “It’s a crucial moment in the storyline, so everyone on set dedicated a lot of effort to perfect it.”

Regarding preparation for the period drama, Taecyeon shared, “Since it’s a fusion historical drama, the acting approach allows more flexibility compared to traditional pieces. Personally, I find the archaic language style somewhat easier.”
Seohyun added, “Interestingly, my character doesn’t use period language at all since she originates from the present. On a related note, we wore hanbok [traditional Korean attire] throughout filming. We shot from fall to spring, and it was quite cold, but the great thing about hanbok is that you can layer thermal clothing underneath without it being noticeable.”

The complete pictorial and interview featuring Seohyun and Taecyeon can be found in the June issue of Esquire Korea. Meanwhile, “The First Night with the Duke” is slated to premiere on June 11 at 9:50 p.m. KST.
