At this year’s Coachella, Charli xcx wrapped up Brat summer by hinting that her fans might embrace a Turnstile summer instead. The hardcore scene has been reveling in its Turnstile era since the Baltimore band released their groundbreaking album GLOW ON in 2022. This standout album achieved success not only for its expansive arena rock sound but also for its intense mosh pit thrills, propelling them to festival headliner spots and Grammy nominations. It sparked a wave that uplifted hardcore bands globally while serving as a departure route for the group that ignited it. NEVER ENOUGH takes a bold step into new territory. The album brims with euphoric energy, incorporating icy funk pop (“Seein’ Stars”), heart-wrenching synth ballads (the closer “Magic Man”), and at least one track ideal for WWE entrance music (“Birds”). Guitarist Pat McRory delivers powerful guitar solos and monumental riffs throughout most tracks. While NEVER ENOUGH spreads its musical wings, its lyrics feel more grounded. Frontman Brendan Yates navigates themes of death and love with a sense of detachment that contrasts sharply with his various yelps, barks, and croons. In “Time Is Happening,” Yates expresses his sorrow over “losing my only friend.” Things take a more optimistic turn in “Sunshower,” where he declares he’s “right where I wanna be,” yet admits he “can’t feel a fucking thing.” The track “Light Design” showcases Yates in a vulnerable moment, as he needs to “hold his head and cry.” If this truly is the summer of Turnstile, then NEVER ENOUGH guarantees it will be an emotional rollercoaster filled with exhilarating highs and lows. — David Renshaw
