Rico Nasty aims to embody and explore everything. More than just a chameleon, she’s a continuous juggler of sounds and concepts, effortlessly picking them up and setting them down with infectious enthusiasm. This has always been a core principle of her artistry, but on her third album, her whimsical polyphonic style is more diverse—and chaotic—than ever.
LETHAL serves as a vibrant canvas, initially infused with the pulsating clicks and thuds of a drum machine paired with a multitude of synths. While it showcases versatility, Rico’s constant dial-tweaking gives the album a somewhat scatterbrained feel.
Nonetheless, there are undeniably standout moments. The bold trap-rock track TEETHSUCKER (YEA3X) showcases her sharp, raspy flow alongside witty, hard-hitting lines—‘I’m tryna pop out like a titty,’ is certainly a memorable quip. In contrast, the ethereal BUTTERFLY KISSES and the dark intensity of GRAVE present intriguing tonal experiments, yet generally, she excels more in the sour than the sweet. The overly saccharine ON THE LOW is a somewhat cringe-inducing tribute to love and desire, while the hyperpop-influenced, baby-voiced PINK can feel a bit grating.
