Sharon Osbourne has shared her thoughts on the remarkable influence of the groundbreaking 2000s reality TV series The Osbournes, acknowledging that its immense popularity left even rock’s iconic family feeling somewhat overwhelmed. In an interview with Metal Hammer for their latest edition, Sharon reflects on the fun they had filming, but notes that the show wasn’t designed for longevity.
“It was an incredible experience,” she tells Metal Hammer editor Eleanor Goodman. “It provided a unique opportunity for us to come together as a family, except for my eldest daughter [Aimee], who chose not to participate. It was a wonderful time, but it was necessary for it to come to an end. It simply couldn’t go on indefinitely because it wasn’t representative of real life, you know?
“It’s the crazy world where strangers invite you to parties in Russia and arrange to fly you there just to show off,” she adds when discussing why the show felt disconnected from reality. “We even received invitations to the White House. It’s like, ‘Why on earth do you want to talk to us? We appreciate the invite, but what do you want from us?’ It was time to return to reality.”
Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 2002, Sharon decided to continue filming the show, even capturing her recovery journey in season two. When asked about her choice to persist with the show, Sharon explains:
“Because I wanted to shield my kids and my husband from the severity of my illness. When people hear the word ‘cancer’, they often think of ‘death’. And you have to consider that this was 23 years ago. Back then, the perception of cancer was quite different. People often viewed it as a death sentence, and I didn’t want my children burdened by fear. I thought, ‘Screw it.’”

The Osbournesultimately aired for four seasons before concluding in 2005. This summer, Ozzy Osbourne will perform his final show alongside his Black Sabbath bandmates at a memorable farewell event at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham. The star-studded concert, titled Back To The Beginning, is set for Saturday July 5 and will feature appearances from Metallica, Pantera, Gojira, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Halestorm and many others.
