Ethel Cain has unveiled the expansive eight-minute track ‘Nettles’, featuring synthesizers sourced from a composer affiliated with Twin Peaks.
‘Nettles’ is set to appear on her upcoming second album, ‘Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You’, announced earlier this year. This new record serves as a prequel to ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ and follows this year’s release of the ‘Perverts’ EP.
This banjo-driven epic explores “a dream of losing someone dear, pleading for their reassurance that the dream won’t materialize, and instead, envisioning the future you’ll share as you age together.”

In addition to providing vocals and playing the banjo, Cain also contributes synthesizers, piano, and various guitars on this track. The song nods to late director David Lynch’s famed series Twin Peaks.
On one of her art-centric platforms, Cain shared that segments of ‘Nettles’ were inspired by Twin Peaks, and she sought out the specific synthesizers used by composer Angelo Badalamenti for the show’s iconic theme. These synthesizers will feature in other tracks on the forthcoming album.
“For everyone mentioning that the intro reminds them of Twin Peaks; late last year, I watched a video where Angelo Badalamenti detailed how he composed Laura’s theme. I loved it so much that I tracked down the very synths he used for the Twin Peaks soundtrack, which I then used for ‘Willoughby…’”, she noted.

Ethel Cain has also confirmed that her album ‘Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You’ is set to release on August 8 – you can pre-save or pre-order the album here.
After the album’s release, Cain will embark on her largest tour to date, performing at venues like London’s Eventim Apollo, Paris’ L’Olympia, New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, and Berkeley’s Greek Theater.

Her most recent project, ‘Perverts’, received a four-star rating from NME: “Casual listeners might not endure even three minutes. However, for those willing to confront its discomfort, ‘Perverts’ unveils layers just as our eyes adjust to darkness.”
In April, Cain made history, becoming the first openly trans artist to have a top 10 album in the US with her critically-acclaimed debut, ‘Preacher’s Daughter’, which gained acclaim nearly three years post-release in May 2022.
In other news relating to Ethel Cain, she gained attention this year for her comments regarding the high-profile murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024.
The murder triggered a manhunt lasting several days, subsequently leading to the arrest of Luigi Mangione, who was discovered with a three-page manifesto criticizing the American healthcare system. Cain expressed her discontent with the system, stating that though she wasn’t “reactionary,” she believed violence was “sometimes” a viable option. “It’s simple,” she articulated. “You instill fear in them and strike where it hurts or nothing will ever change.” She concluded her Instagram post with the hashtag “KillMoreCEOs”.
This incited considerable backlash, particularly from conservative circles, with Fox News calling for a boycott against the musician due to her “terrorist” and “depraved” remarks.
