On May 30 KST, the boy band MCND issued an official notice informing fans that members Minjae, Hwijoon, and Win will be temporarily pausing their group activities due to “personal schedules”.
The three MCND members, who made their debut in 2020, are among a select group of K-Pop idols expected to participate in Mnet‘s upcoming global boy group audition show, ‘Boys II Planet‘.
This marks the second season of the well-received audition series ‘Boys Planet‘, which led to the formation of the project group ZEROBASEONE. ‘Boys II Planet’ promises an even grander scale and more rigorous evaluations for its participants.
The program is attracting attention for potentially featuring a significant number of contestants with previous debut experience.
Similar to MCND’s recent update, several K-Pop boy groups have begun announcing temporary hiatuses for some members since early May. It’s widely believed these idols are stepping back from group activities to compete in ‘Boys II Planet’. Those confirmed to have announced breaks so far include: WHIB’s Jayder, Leejeong, and Wonjun (debuted 2023), DKB’s Heechan and Harry June (2020), The Wind’s Thanatorn (debuted 2023), BLITZERS’s Chris (debuted 2021), VERIVERY’s Dongheon, Gyehyeon, and Kangmin (debuted 2018), WEi’s Kim Jun Seo (debuted 2020), and DRIPPIN’s Lee Hyeop and Kim Dong Yoon (debuted 2020).
In another development, ‘Boys II Planet’ announced a revised format for the program on May 23 KST. Initially, the plan was to split contestants into two groups – ‘Planet K’ and ‘Planet C’ – with the aim of selecting winning members from each to form a group debuting in Korea and another debuting in China. However, Mnet has since adjusted the format to choose only one winning group. During the early rounds, competition will occur separately in ‘Planet K’ and ‘Planet C’, culminating in a unified main competition.
Mnet’s ‘Boys II Planet’ is set to premiere on July 17 (K) and July 18 (C).
