‘Victory,’ the rapper’s first LP since 1999’s ‘The Art of Storytelling,’ is set to be released on June 13 through Idris Elba’s record label, 7Wallace, in partnership with Mass Appeal.
This project, labeled a “visual album,” features Idris as executive producer alongside Rick and includes contributions from Nas, Giggs, and Estelle.
“Victory is about perseverance, storytelling, imagination, and evolution. It’s a visual fusion of art and emotion — a sonic journey that mirrors where I’ve been and where I’m headed. Victory isn’t merely music; it’s a bold statement showcasing British artistry at its peak!” Slick Rick mentioned in a press statement.
The album, along with its 30-minute short film directed by Meji Alabi (who also directed Beyoncé’s Black Is King), will make its debut on June 7 at the first-ever SXSW London, followed by a discussion featuring Slick Rick, Elba, and Alabi. Tickets are available now here. Check out the trailer below.
Regarding the project, Idris Elba said: “Collaborating with Slick Rick… back in the UK, and delivering something remarkable to the hip-hop world has been truly rewarding. It’s a genuine gift!
“Slick Rick and I share a long history of working together, so it was fantastic to reunite in the studio for this new record. He has been a pivotal figure in Hip Hop culture, and I’m eager for him to present this project to a new generation of fans.”
In a 2021 interview with NME, Rick discussed his lengthy absence from music, stating he doesn’t regret taking a break: “If you’re not inspired, then you just chill. But if you’re inspired, grab your paintbrush and start painting, and when you feel it’s ready to be shown, then display it.”
Additionally, Ben Affleck recently named Rick as one of his hypothetical Mount Rushmore of rappers.
