Ed Sheeran has announced that his upcoming track “Drive” will feature both Dave Grohl and John Mayer. This rock-inspired song will be part of the soundtrack for the Formula 1 movie F1, which is slated for release alongside the film on June 27.
A snippet of the song was shared on the soundtrack’s Instagram account, which Sheeran later re-posted, providing some additional details. “Here’s a sneak peek of the song I contributed to the F1 film,” he wrote on an Instagram Story. “Mayer on guitar, Grohl on drums. It was a blast creating this, arriving next month with the movie x.”
F1 the Album will showcase 17 tracks, featuring contributions from artists like Sheeran, Doja Cat, Burna Boy, Raye, Tate McRae, Don Toliver, Madison Beer, Rosé, Tiësto, and Chris Stapleton. So far, “Lose My Mind,” by Toliver and Doja, and “Messy,” by Rosé, have been released.
Directed and produced by Joseph Kosinski, with co-executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, F1 features Brad Pitt as the washed-up driver Sonny Hayes, known as the “greatest that never was.” He comes out of retirement to assist his friend and former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) in saving their struggling racing team, Apex Grand Prix. His rookie teammate, Joshua “Noah” Pearce (Damson Idris), has raw talent but lacks experience, and together they will compete fiercely in a sport where sharing a podium is a rarity — let alone a championship.
Sheeran is gearing up to release his next studio album, Play, on Sept. 12. “Play was crafted as a direct response to one of the darkest periods of my life,” Sheeran remarked in a statement. “Emerging from that, I wanted to create joy and vibrancy, exploring cultures in the places I was touring.” The LP was recorded in various locations during his travels and was finalized in Goa, India. It restored a sense of lightness, providing him with some of “the most enjoyable and creatively exploratory days of my life.”
He first teased the album with “Azizam,” an upbeat single celebrating freedom on the dance floor, and has since unveiled “Old Phone.” Play marks the beginning of a new series of albums by Sheeran, which will be followed by Rewind, Fast-Forward, and Stop, continuing the theme he established with Plus, Multiply, Divide, Subtract, and Equals.
