Lorde’s fresh single “Man of the Year” arrives after her candid discussions regarding her gender identity.
Exciting new music from Lorde is on the horizon! The New Zealand artist is definitely gearing up for a vibrant Lorde summer 2025 (a term popularized by Charli XCX at Coachella) with her standout track “What Was That”.
The artist has promised fans even more content leading up to the release of her album Virgin, which is set for next month. On Monday (19 May), the “Mood Ring” singer took to Instagram to unveil her new single.
“Man Of The Year. A piece straight from my core. This is the song I’m most proud of on Virgin. Releasing next week. Photographed by Talia Chetrit,” she shared under the visual. The cover art appears to feature the singer’s torso with duct tape across her chest, recalling her recent appearance at the Met Gala.
This announcement follows Lorde’s openness about her gender identity, as she mentioned to Rolling Stone that she identifies as “in the middle, gender-wise” and told Chappell Roan, “I’m a woman except on the days I feel like a man.”
In a conversation with artist Martine Syms for Document Journal, she revealed that her album draws inspiration from her journey of “embracing [her] masculinity” and witnessing her “gender expanding a bit”.
Lorde’s recent Met Gala look, featuring a silver two-piece ensemble by Thom Browne, included a binder-like bandeau, symbolizing this phase of her life “gender-wise”.
“This is custom Thom Browne, essentially my creation. It contains hidden meanings,” the two-time Grammy winner explained.
“All will unfold in time. I truly love the open back. To me, it symbolizes where I am in terms of gender. I feel both like a man and a woman, you know?”
In an email to her fans following the announcement of Virgin, Lorde expressed feeling “scared” about the album, as she would be “laying bare the deepest parts” of her experiences through her music.
She added that she aimed to create a work that captured her femininity: raw, primal, innocent, elegant, openhearted, and masculine.
Look out for Lorde’s upcoming single “Man of the Year,” which is set to release next week.
