Aussie Lorde enthusiasts are likely pondering “What Was That” after the New Zealand pop sensation unexpectedly appeared at a Sydney nightclub hosting a party in her honor.
Lorde, gearing up for the release of her new album Virgin next month, is currently in Australia as part of the promotional tour for the record. Her visit coincided with a special event held at Sydney’s Mary’s Underground.
Titled What Was That: A Club Night Dedicated to Lorde, the event took place on Sunday (May 25) with Australian DJ Xeimma spinning the Kiwi artist’s hits. “We’re officially in the L4 era, so it’s only fitting we throw a party for our true Lorde & savior!” the venue announced on social media.
However, videos from the event reveal that Mary’s Underground also had a surprise guest in attendance, with Lorde herself joining the celebration.
Arriving without any fanfare, Lorde was spotted among the crowd, where only a few fans initially recognized her, shaking hands and chatting. But as more audience members caught sight of her, the excitement escalated, turning the night into chaos as she became the center of attention.
As the night progressed, Lorde eventually found herself on stage, dancing to her tracks with fans, even taking her turn behind Xeimma’s DJ booth as the crowd focused on her. “Still in disbelief. Feeling unbelievably grateful to Lorde for making this a night we’ll cherish for years,” Xeimma expressed on Instagram after the event.
“It’s official – Lorde came to my party on May 25, 2025,” she wrote. “After many years of hosting events, this was one of the most fulfilling nights of my life. Absolutely unmatched.”
Lorde recently kicked off her new era with the release of “What Was That” on April 24, and Virgin is set to be released on June 27.
On May 19, she also revealed the artwork for her upcoming single, “Man Of The Year,” which she announced will be coming this week at a yet-to-be-determined date. “An offering from really deep inside me,” she described the track. “The song I’m the proudest of on Virgin.”
