The official documentary featuring the German thrash metal legends KREATOR, titled “Kreator – Hate & Hope”, is set to premiere on July 2 at the 42nd Munich International Film Festival, which will take place from June 27 to July 6. Directed by Cordula Kablitz-Post, the 110-minute film will have its theatrical release on September 4.
Official description of “Kreator – Hate & Hope”: “To their fans across the globe, they are deities; yet, their music bears the mark of the devil — more aggressive, faster, and fiercely uncompromising than others. The German band KREATOR has undoubtedly reached the zenith of the thrash metal genre. The film ‘Kreator – Hate & Hope’ chronicles the forty-year saga of this iconic metal band, from their beginnings as a school ensemble in 1982 in the Ruhr area to the grand global stages of their current world tour. Even now, they remain opposed to the hatred and abysses present in our society. With sharp tones, masterful guitar riffs, and dynamic drumbeats, they process the turmoil of our civilization through immense willpower and creativity. Between quotes from Hannah Arendt and images of headless corpses, a crafted poetry of chaos arises, filled with symbols of horror — a musical Molotov cocktail against evil, offering a cathartic experience.
For her latest documentary, director Cordula Kablitz-Post (‘Die Toten Hosen – You Only Live Once’) spent a year touring with the legendary thrash metal band from the Ruhrpott: from Wacken Open Air to Tokyo, Osaka, Bangalore, Los Angeles, and concluding with ‘Klash Of The Ruhrpott’ in Gelsenkirchen, where Germany’s metal elite convene. Featuring personal archive footage and engaging interviews with artists such as Scott Ian / ANTHRAX, Chuck Billy / TESTAMENT, Bela B. / DIE ÄRZTE, guitarist Phil Demmel / formerly of MACHINE HEAD, Maik Weichert / HEAVEN SHALL BURN, Nergal / BEHEMOTH, Lars Eidinger, and Andy Sneap), they embark on an honest and humorous exploration of the vibrant heart of German music history.”
In other news related to KREATOR, frontman Mille Petrozza will release his official autobiography, co-written with journalist, author, and presenter Torsten Groß, titled “Your Heaven, My Hell – Mein Leben, Heavy Metal Und Wie Das Alles Passieren Konnte” (“Your Heaven, My Hell – My Life, Heavy Metal, And How It All Could Happen”) on August 28, published by Ullstein Verlag. The book is available for pre-order now.
Last fall, Petrozza commented to Oran O’Beirne of Fistful Of Metal magazine about the KREATOR documentary: “I have to be honest, this documentary wasn’t our concept, and we haven’t been involved in its production. The entire idea came from Cordula, who approached us with this proposal, and she has complete creative control. She is a highly regarded director with a track record of producing exceptional cinematic documentaries, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the final product.”
He elaborated: “I usually like to be in control of projects like this, so it’s a surreal experience not being at the helm regarding creative decisions, yet I have complete trust in Cordula.”
Concerning his forthcoming book, Mille remarked: “The book is complete. A friend and I have collaborated on it, focusing specifically on the band’s formative years, especially up to 1992. We’re working with a German publisher who hopefully will provide an English version. As of now, we aim for a release in 2025.”
He added: “I can also share that the working title is ‘Your Heaven, My Hell’, delving into the challenges of forming the band, the influence of the tape-trading community back then, and many stories and memorable moments that led to the current position of the band. So, stay tuned for more updates coming soon.”
In 2001, Cordula established Avanti Media Fiction, specializing in producing feature films as well as high-quality television and theatrical documentaries.
KREATOR recently entered Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, with producer Jens Bogren to start recording their sixteenth studio album, scheduled for an early 2026 release. Bogren has previously worked on KREATOR‘s albums “Phantom Antichrist” (2012) and “Gods Of Violence” (2017).
KREATOR‘s upcoming album will be a follow-up to 2022’s “Hate Über Alles”, which was recorded at Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, Germany. The sessions for that album were managed by Arthur Rizk, known for his work with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, CODE ORANGE, POWER TRIP, and SOULFLY, among others.
“Hate Über Alles” was the first album featuring bassist Frédéric Leclercq, who joined the band in 2019.
KREATOR had their first performance with Leclercq in October 2019 in Santiago, Chile.
Before becoming a member of KREATOR, Leclercq gained fame with the U.K.-based extreme power metal band DRAGONFORCE, for whom he played bass from 2005 until August 2019.
