The uplifting and anthemic track serves as the newest preview of the singer-songwriter’s forthcoming album ‘Play’, following the releases of ‘Azizam’ and ‘Old Phone’.
‘Sapphire’ celebrates love that knows no bounds, featuring elaborate South-Asian percussion along with backing vocals and sitar by the renowned Indian artist Arijit Singh. Production credits go to Ilya Salmanzadeh, Johnny McDaid, and Savan Kotecha.
“Sapphire was the first track I completed for ‘Play’ that indicated the direction of the album for me. That’s why I wrapped up the recording process in Goa, surrounded by some of the finest musicians in India. The creative experience was remarkable,” Sheeran elaborated.
“I filmed the music video with Liam [Pethick, director] and Nic [Minns, DOP] during my India tour earlier this year; we aimed to highlight the beauty and diversity of the country and its culture.”
He added: “The final piece for me was having Arijit on the record. It took a journey to reach that point, and it was such a wonderful day of music and family.”
“He and I have created a complete Punjabi version of the song that will be released in the next few weeks, featuring him much more prominently. This version is the album iteration and my favorite on the record. I hope you all enjoy it.”
The visuals start with Sheeran performing the track on a rooftop at dawn, then guide viewers through vibrant spots – from beaches to riversides and bustling markets. Singh makes a cameo in the video, which also features the iconic actor Shah Rukh Khan.
In March, Sheeran assured fans that a new track named ‘Sapphire’ would drop in the upcoming months and mentioned his plans to release new music every two to three weeks.
He recently shared that ‘Play’ “was created as a direct response to one of the darkest times in my life,” while also previewing a guitar-driven collaboration with John Mayer and Dave Grohl called ‘Drive’.
In other updates, Sheeran has scheduled three significant homecoming shows in Ipswich for this summer. Find any remaining tickets here.
Last month, he surprised fans by appearing at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool after an unscheduled performance in Sheffield and a cozy set at Coachella 2025.
