Taylor Swift premiered “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version),” a re-recorded version of her 2017 hit from the album Reputation, during an episode of The Handmaid’s Tale on May 19. The song featured in the ninth episode of season six. It has not yet been made available on streaming platforms or announced as part of the full album Reputation (Taylor’s Version). The song’s extensive airing follows a teaser in Wilderness earlier in 2023. Check out the longer version below.
“I’ve wanted to feature a Taylor song on the show for years, and we finally found the perfect moment for it. I’m thrilled we waited because this song is just right for this moment,” said Elisabeth Moss, the lead actress and executive producer of the series, in an interview with Billboard. “Taylor has always inspired me personally. As a Swiftie, I can speak for [co-star] Yvonne [Strahovski] and our entire cast as well, all of whom are fans. It’s an honor to incorporate her music into the final episodes of our show.”
Featuring hits like “Look What You Made Me Do” and “…Ready for It?,” Reputation was Swift’s fifth No. 1 album and the last released under Big Machine Records, the label that had released her previous albums. Although it received only one Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album, Swift lost to Ariana Grande and Sweetener. She collaborated with producer Jack Antonoff on a portion of Reputation, but most of it was produced with Max Martin and Shellback. Additionally, Future and Ed Sheeran contributed to “End Game.”
To date, Swift has re-released four albums: Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, with Speak Now and 1989 following in 2023. She began re-recording her pre-Lover catalog in 2019 after Scooter Braun acquired her discography by purchasing Big Machine Label Group. In a 2022 interview with NPR, Braun expressed that he had “regrets” regarding the deal.
In addition to her re-recorded albums, Swift has released new material, including her 10th studio album, Midnights, in October 2022, and her 11th album, The Tortured Poets Department, in April 2024. She recently concluded her record-breaking Eras Tour, which spanned multiple years and took her around the globe.
