Newly hired Who drummer Scott Devours shares his overwhelming feelings following Zak Starkey’s dismissal.

Scott Devours has shared the “surge of emotions” he is experiencing as The Who’s newly appointed touring drummer, following Zak Starkey’s unexpected and debated departure earlier this week.

In a recent Facebook post, Devours reflects on the surreal thrill of achieving his dream role – which he describes as “the pinnacle moment” of his career, while recognizing the conflicting feelings surrounding Starkey’s exit as a fellow fan.

“With a brief, straightforward Instagram post, Pete and Roger have once again changed my life forever,” the drummer states, referencing The Who’s announcement on the platform from earlier this week. “It’s challenging to articulate the surge of emotions I’m processing since that incredible news, but there are several things I feel I must express.”

“Firstly, I want to extend my gratitude to all the family, friends, and fans for the messages, texts, and emails congratulating me and sharing their enthusiasm. Please accept this collective: ‘thank you’. The level of positivity directed my way has been absolutely overwhelming, and I genuinely appreciate each and every one of you. Also, please refrain from asking me for tickets, lol.”

Devours then proceeds to address those feeling disheartened about Starkey’s departure, acknowledging that it’s a sentiment he resonates with as a fan of the band.

“Secondly, I recognize and accept that many lifelong Who fans are genuinely saddened by the news that Zak is no longer on the throne for The Who,” he explains. “Being a huge fan myself, I too am processing this loss with a heavy heart. It’s truly a perplexing mix of feelings to experience the greatest moment of my professional journey while also feeling the sadness and shadow of someone else’s departure. It’s difficult to articulate, but I know it exists and it’s genuine.”

“The reality is this,” Devours adds. “I understand there will be fans who cannot accept me or anyone else on that throne but Zak. I acknowledge that this will be the case for some. For others, perhaps the verdict is still out. Maybe I’ll need to let the music speak for itself?”

“In my perspective, there are no larger shoes to fill than those of Pete and Roger. The weight of this responsibility is immense, and I am acutely aware of every ounce of it. What I want to convey to all of the fans is that I will do everything possible to honor the legacy of The Who, Zak, Kenney Jones, Simon Phillips, and the memory of the legendary Keith Moon. For my name to even be mentioned alongside theirs sends shivers down my spine, and I realize that I need to earn this honor,” the musician expresses.

“Since this will be the last time Pete and Roger tour the US, performing the greatest songs ever written, I will dedicate every second of my time, every beat of my heart, and every drop of my sweat and blood to this undertaking. This is my ultimate objective.”
