Marina Diamandis has announced that her feud with Charli XCX has ended, stating that Charli “fully deserves” the acclaim for her ‘Brat’ album.
The artist, also known as MARINA, previously had a well-publicized falling out with Charli XCX nearly a decade ago.
This rift emerged when both were popular on Tumblr in the 2010s, largely due to the striking visuals associated with their albums, ‘True Romance’ and ‘Electra Heart’. They even toured together during this period, but tensions rose after a photoshoot featuring Charli.
The conflict began in 2015 when Charli’s photoshoot drew comparisons to the artwork for MARINA’s single ‘Immortal’, as both showcased neon-colored fruit. MARINA publicly addressed the issue on social media, stating, “Imagery is artistic property. Please respect your fellow artists,” to which Charli replied: “You know what, sometimes you do a photoshoot standing in front of a plant, sometimes you do a photoshoot in black and white, sometimes you wear purple eyeshadow.
“Sometimes you shoot with the same photographer as another artist. That’s just how the industry works.”

The feud persisted for years, and earlier this year, Charli even revealed that they still didn’t follow each other on her private Instagram, @brat_360. However, she mentioned that while she “did [still] feel negatively years later”, there was “no negativity” now as “our worlds just don’t cross”.
Recently, it seems that the disagreement has been set aside, as Diamandis shared in a new interview that the accolades for the ‘Brat’ album are well-deserved. These remarks followed her message to Charli last summer, expressing how the “courageous” song ‘Girl, So Confusing’ brought her to tears.
MARINA praises the “Girl, so confusing” remix by Charli xcx and Lorde:

Just cried listening to it.

“I think these moments are significant. It was touching to see the response from people,” Marina told Rolling Stone, reflecting on their discussion from last year. “I admire her work, and it’s so inspiring to witness what she created with ‘Brat’. She absolutely deserves it.”
Prior to their fallout, the two collaborated on a track titled ‘Just Desserts’ in 2013, though it was never officially released. It can still be found on each of their YouTube channels.
‘Brat’ had a monumental impact last year, leading to a summer filled with Brat-themed events, a groundbreaking remix album, sold-out arena tours, and three Grammy Awards.
‘Brat’ was also named NME‘s best album of 2024, with Karen Gwee stating: “‘Brat’ as a cultural phenomenon was truly remarkable. But ‘Brat’ as an album – the focal point of the rollout, the music behind the marketing – is simply exceptional… This album is not only peak Charli but also a new benchmark for modern pop.”
As for MARINA, she has just released her new album ‘PRINCESS OF POWER’, marking her sixth studio record and her first since 2021’s ‘Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land’.
